Re: New British graphic novels/comics
Thanks so much, Tony. Yes, that was a pretty scary number of years ago when you count them out! I learnt a lot about clarity of image doing that work with you - and I'm very grateful for the experience it gave me.
Hope you're doing well.

Thanks very much, steelclaw. I'm nervously hoping it will be successful, even modestly successful will do!

Re: New British graphic novels/comics
Egmont have World English Language rights only. There has been interest from other countries, but I think they're waiting for all three parts to be completed first. The division of Egmont I'm with (Egmont Publishing) mainly do the licensed books (Rupert Bear, Thomas the Tank Engine, Tintin, Ben 10),...

Re: New British graphic novels/comics
:-) Cheers, Lew - I didn't want to appear as though I was advertising, but am genuinely interested to know if there's anything special about the book's release (still appreciate the plug!). Perhaps I should have a good look through Steve Holland's past 'upcoming releases' posts and get some actual n...

New British graphic novels/comics
I don't keep a particularly close eye on the UK comic industry - a fairly close one, but I'm not as knowledgeable as many here - and wondered how common it is for a major British book publisher to bring out a graphic novel (or comic album/book - depending on your preferred term) that is new, ie. not...

Re: News and what's happening
Some RO press releasage, if you'll indulge me :-) The full web version of my comic strip, The Rainbow Orchid, is going to remain online for just one more week! Book publication of volume one is set for 4 August 2009, so after the bank holiday weekend (Tuesday 5 May) the online strip will become a pr...

Re: DFC the adventure stories are too slow...
I agree, the adventure stories are at a slower pace. I'm enjoying them, though. A lot of the old comics had rather 'ludicrous' plots - which were fun, but even as a kid I found some of the short-cuts ridiculous. I don't think there's any editorial control saying "this is going to be a graphic novel,...

Re: DFC NO:1
Back to the DFC - issue 4 arrived today. Any thoughts on the cover? I think it's brilliant, a great idea. Would probably not have been done if it had to go on a WH Smith shelf, with half the cover being taken up by a bag with some plastic rubbish inside. I didn't even open the comic for 5 minutes wh...

Re: DFC NO:1
Mike - cheers for your 'damn' notes  and correction on the 'damned lies' quote - I think we're in agreement. But my main point was that the word 'damn' in itself is not short for the phrase 'damn you' - that's just a use of the diminutive (as you suggest, 'damn it' would be my meaning). But I'...

Re: DFC NO:1
Again, Steve - agree. Personally I do not like the overuse of the f-word on the television, just as I despair at the use of guns in (mostly American) entertainment as the hero's answer to all problems. The only reason I actually raised this issue is because I do not consider 'damn' to be at all offe...

Re: DFC NO:1 (damn)
Thanks for your reply, Mike, appreciate your thoughts. At the risk of sliding helplessly into off-topicdom, I must say that 'damn' is not short for 'damn you'. Damn means to condemn, it exists quite happily on its own. If you have "lies and more damn lies" you are not saying "lies and more damn you ...

Re: DFC NO:1
Heh - fiddlesticks! :D Can't use it as I need two people on the opposite ends of a phone line to say it after putting the phone down, one a 12 year old boy, one an ancient old codger - so would be a coincidence if they both said fiddlesticks! Or rats! Or hell's bells! Damn isn't short for anything, ...

Re: DFC NO:1
If children's comic creators can't come up with an inventive (and even humorous) replacement for swearing, then perhaps they should be doing something else for a living. Steve - a thoughtful answer, and I agree with you. Concerning my use of "damn", I feel unsure as to how 'bad' the word is. I mean...
