Re: DC is the new Marvel and Marvel is the new DC
I just wish superheroes would take a holiday for a few years, and give other comic genres a chance. There's a single solitary comic shop in my part of the world, and if you don't want superheroes, you're stuffed. OK, they've got a bit of horror, a bit of manga, and Doctor Who, but where's the funny...

New Thunderbirds
Is anyone else watching the new Thunderbirds series? I'm quite enjoying it. I'm sure a lot of purists are complaining at the changes that have been made, but they mostly make sense. Only thing that irritates me is the Star Wars holograms they use. Oh, and maybe the running gag about grandma's cookin...

Colour me intrigued (which is probably a shade between indigo and violet). I shall give it a try.

Re: DC is the new Marvel and Marvel is the new DC
The problem with mainstream superhero comics is that the companies abandoned the newsstand and embraced the direct sales market, giving up on that naturally self-renewing audience that had been the core audience for so many years. Nowadays the comics are read and produced by aging fanboys who've se...

Re: DC is the new Marvel and Marvel is the new DC
I'd heard that as DC were moving to L.A., this Convergence thingy nonsense was a stopgap for a few months. Keep the money coming in while they got themselves set up again. Cover prices have gone up, haven't they? My pal, Wee John has given up on Convergence after reading the first month's offerings...

Re: Spider-Gwen
Of course there's a very good reason why they called the comic Spider-Gwen - there's already another ongoing comic starring Jessica Drew called Spider-Woman. Oh, if it were only that simple. Consider that Spider-Man titles have included The Amazing Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Avenging S...

Re: comic censorship
It's odd that I'll happily believe a man can fly, or a woman can become the embodiment of a star, but a guy who blends into the jungle with his purple costume breaks my suspension of disbelief. Re: D&D. It was big in the 1980s and a lot of religious groups got in a tizzy about it being a gateway dru...

Re: comic censorship
Now I'm curious to find out how comics fans with a strong religious faith feel about these types of publications. But perhaps that is a step too far. Have you never seen any bible comics? Or those Jack Chick tracts that use comics to explain why people who play D&D are going to hell? http://media.c...

DC is the new Marvel and Marvel is the new DC
I find it very odd that Marvel's big event for this year resembles DC's classic Crisis on Infinite Earths, in the way it appears to be designed to integrate their various properties and start over fresh, while DC's big event for the year involves getting together lots of their characters and making ...

Re: Spider-Gwen
The Spiderverse storyline that introduced her is one of the more fun events in comics, and included an anthology title Edge of the Spiderverse that focussed on different variations on the Spider-Man character (many of them entirely new). I particularly liked the steampunk Lady Spider, myself. Althou...

Spider-Gwen
A phenomenon that may have passed you by unless you read Spider-Man comics or follow a lot of sites that cover American comics is the unexpected return to the spotlight of Gwen Stacy. Originally the quintesential Girl in the Refridgerator, Spider-Man's girlfriend who was murdered by the Green Goblin...

Re: Finding original English version of a Dutch translation
Perhaps it's not a British strip at all. In panel four, note that the lorry is left-hand drive. Yes, but the driver is on the right hand side in panel one, so I'm not sure that's conclusive. The construction of panel four is very odd anyway. If the driver's head and shoulders are on the driver's se...

Re: comic censorship
Abacus has learned three things, first the importance of composing his posts more thoughtfully, secondly the pointlessness of answering a couple of questions with a couple of questions, and finally the need to think twice, and then twice more, before taking on Marionette, a formidable opponent when...

Re: comic censorship
The idea that you can't say 'blackboard' (or sing 'baa baa black sheep', etc.) was a lie, long since admitted, published by The Sun almost thirty years ago, to promote alarmist ideas about a 'Loony Left.' It was made up nonsense. Amazing enough that anyone fell for it back then, astonishing if anyo...

Re: comic censorship
Are you actually suggesting that racism did not exist until someone complained about it? Or are you just ignorant of the background and history of the golliwog and the blackface minstrel tradition it comes from? Are you suggesting that young children are racists because they loved golliwogs?However...
