Re: DFC NO:1
Hmmm... I'm interested in the reaction to the 'swearing issue'. I think 'bloody' is just about okay. I wouldn't use 'b******'. What do you think of the word 'damn'? I ask because I'm using it (subject to censorship) in my DFC strip. I can't think of another word to use in its place, it does exactly ...

Yes, Paul - there will be a back issue system in place.

D C Thomson in the family
Being a bit of a part-time genealogist, and with half my family hailing from Dundee, I've come across one or two second or fourth cousins who work or have worked for DC Thomson. Anyway, today I got an email from a cousin (once-removed!) who says: "...a very close friend of ours, Dave Donaldson, is E...

Re: DFC NO:1
I was nearer the front and thought Nick's speech was really good, coming from the perspective of someone who's been in comics quite a while and talking about those of us who have had to use our talents more for illustration and in the business world (like me!), and now here are opportunities opening...

Re: DFC NO:1
we're all aware of the dfc but aside from the guardian's kids section, how have children been specifically targetted? ... or are they hoping that parents will buy into it instead? Well here's one example... http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/thedfc I guess it would mainly be parent-led (to begin wit...

Re: DFC NO:1
Actually you've just reminded me - I published a comics anthology in 1988 called 'Cosmorama' - and that had a free gift with its first issue - a flexi-disc!

Re: DFC NO:1
The subscription model is a risk, but it's a brave alternative strategy, in my view, in the face of the prohibitive costs involved in getting a new title on to newsagent shelves - it wouldn't happen otherwise. The DFC will have no advertising - it's all story. I've subscribed and am looking forward ...

Re: New UK adventure comic
Ah yes, well, Sexton Blake - I don't know him well, but certainly enough to know the kind of thing you mean and I'm right with you. Well - maybe less on the 'boarding school pranks' stuff! A nice classic British adventure, exploration, mystery, intrigue, decent characters? I dunno, maybe someone, so...

Re: New UK adventure comic
One thing i would like to see that's not going any more is a revival of the turn-of-the-(20th)-century detective/adventure story papers, but that's so "out there" i may as well wish for gold bars to flap through my window on little wings. Besides i have far too many actual issues from that time to ...

Re: New UK adventure comic
I'd like to see a return to the principle that if a comic is aimed at 8 to 11 year olds, you pitch the tone for the 11 year olds, not the 8 year olds. The reason being that if a kid thinks something is "babyish" he'll drop it like a stone, but if an 8 year old thinks he's gotten hold of something f...

Re: New UK adventure comic
For some reason I read those last two as one - 'Rampage Striker!' - now there's a comic to read!Lew Stringer wrote:But UK adventure comics haven't died. What about 2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine, Commando, Spectacular Spider-Man and (until recent years) Warhammer, Action Man, Rampage, Striker?

Re: New UK adventure comic
Lew - that's an excellent question. The thing I really miss in British comics is just a darn good adventure story, one that will whisk you away into another world of exciting things. I do wonder if, to some extent, story has become one of the minor ingredients in a comic today. We all know that a go...

Carry On Sergeant!
When I was a kid I was obsessed with war comics, I bought everything that was on the racks at the newsagent. I don't know for sure if it was *because* of those comics, but I knew for certain I didn't ever want to join up!
