THE SLOPERIAN - NEW FANZINE.

Post by stevezodiac »

I was looking through the British comics section of ebay and came across a few listings for this new fan magazine cover date Summer 2012. I've just bought a copy. Here is the description:

THE SLOPERIAN is a new, privately published magazine about vintage British comics. Its purpose is to promote and inform. In this first issue are articles about creators W.G. Baxter, Jack Prout, A.T. ‘Charlie’ Pease, Tom Browne and Percy Cocking, Harry O’Neill and Gilbert Dalton. That means you will also find Ally Sloper, Black Bob, Plum and Duff, Weary Willie and Tired Tim, Patriotic Paul, the wonder athlete Wilson and many others.

The magazine is non-profit; the £5 price is for printing, postage, eBay and PayPal charges.

Note: I’m selling some artwork on eBay at the moment. Winning bidders who ask for THE SLOPERIAN will receive a free copy.

None currently, as far as I know. Most people do blogs instead now.

I've just reviewed The Sloperian here:

So do I but, as I'm sure you appreciate, blogs are simple to design and free to produce whereas fanzines take time to design and cost money that may not be regained.

I hope a lot of people here will buy The Sloperian and that it won't suffer the lack of support that Crikey! undeservedly had. I know some collectors are only interested in their personal nostalgia when it comes to comics but for anyone curious about the history of British comics this mag is a must. The editor/main writer Alan Clark is a true UK comic expert and he writes well.

Yay! - Golden Fun rides again! I really hope this means that Alan will be back in the saddle for many more issues - as well as adding to the list of excellent books about comics that he was famous for a decade or two ago (I can't imagine where he's been).

Naturally I've ordered a copy, and trust that everyone else will do so as well. This venture really deserves our support.

Just thought it wise to point out that the article on Black Bob in the new Sloperian magazine was written by me nearly twenty years ago for Golden Fun and, when that illustrious magazine folded, never used.
And, as I didn't have the oppurtunity to edit it for current publication there was no chance to include facts on Bob's production that have been unearthed in the intervening years.
The articles on Gilbert Dalton and 'Charlie' Pease are fantastic though.

I received my copy today. It's a little slim, but well worth a fiver if you have an interest in (very) early comics. The article on Gilbert Dalton was particularly interesting - not enough is written about the wordsmiths who spun those often generic, but usually hugely entertaining, tales in the 'story papers'. Apparently he was writing between 30,000 and 45,000 words per week from 1936... :o

So...heartily recommended if you prefer to read stuff on paper.

Finally read it
Liked reading about the adventure comic writer and how much he wrote!! Gilbert Dalton!!

Also some comic artist draw the same characters for a long time..
Weary Willie and Tired Tim and Casey's Court having very long time with the same artist..40 years..
like Bill Ritchie did..and David Sutherland is currently doing for the Bash street kids..

it really shows there was a comic past!!! deserves to be celebrated..
Liked Charlie Pease style and what great Casey courts he drew..
anyone got an example of the Tommy Cooper strip by Charlie..the two panels looked very good printed in the issue..

Could've been longer too, as didn't those strips end not because the artist retired, but because the comic folded?

Yes, although strips about jolly tramps had become old hat (no pun intended) after 60 years. It would have been nice if Fleetway had kept such legendary characters going though, but at least they had a happy ending.

Things like that show the difference between the UK and publishers of some other countries. The USA for example have been reviving their old characters constantly over the years, or at least keeping them in print in archive books. Sadly, as we know, practically all the old AP/Fleetway/IPC characters have been allowed to fade into obscurity. Hundreds of characters - forgotten, outside of websites such as this.
