It's remarkable how Dan Dare a typical british hero persists. The mention of a purist version would certainly appeal to the older generation of Eagle fans who remember how the original series was grounded in british family life , cricket, aunts, uncles and local dialects etc.I also liked Mekon and the treens Dare's original enemy's.I did buy a copy of the 1989 revival (as shown )but only for the cover art.

Whether the new version will be a success or not who knows ? But it seems unlikely interest in Dan Dare will fade for a long time yet.

A character can evolve with time or it can stagnate. Judge Dredd evolved. Robo-Hunter stagnated. Strontium Dog stagnated; its current arc is poor; once, it was a permanent feature of 2000 ad - now it deigns to bless the pages once a year. Dare has no evolution on which to grasp unlike Dredd. The yesteryear's art of Dare is beautiful; characterisation is sadly lacking - a fact that early 2000 ad soon realized. With Dare there is more than a generation gap to bridge; Dredd's bridge has never been breached... the lucky facist!

It'll be interesting to see Titan's take on the character. New stories based on the original Dan Dare have been running in Spaceship Away over the last several years of course, and will continue I presume.
