Were British comics created solely for children?

Talk here about just about anything associated with British comics or story papers and the industry that does not fit in any other forum.
There are separate fora open to registered members for discussing specific comics, artists, websites etc.

The strange thing is that in Britain it was the humorous strips intended for adults that tended to be more placid and twee than the children's comics such as Beano and Wham!
