I don't recall ever visiting Bermondsey, Steve. If I venture over there one of these days is there any shop near the railway station selling bricks and stones or will I need to bring my own?

There should be a bombsite nearby, wherever you are. I grew up on them. Great playgrounds. Of course as kids we never realised the horror of them. My mum was bombed out of three homes but never told us until much later.

Just come back from Spitalfields Antique Market. Rubbish. They have built a large eatery in the middle of it with loads of tables outside. Its as if people cannot venture too far away from food nowadays. Have a bowl of porridge before you leave home you great nits. There does seem to be fewer stalls there now. Pushed out by this need for people to have nosh going down their gregorys with all due despatch.

Funny but in 60 years of living in Bermondsey I have still never been to Bermondsey Antique Market on Fridays. Its been going since 1950 so I have no excuses.

Getting back on topic and therefore justifying this ramble. My first thought was Winchester 73. A superb James Stewart western where he wins a limited edition Winchester carbine in a shooting contest but it is then stolen or lost/changes hands several times.

Winchester 73 does sound like an interesting read but it's definitely The Gun. I'm now browsing through the stories again, and trying to remember why I was reading Warlord as a child and why my memory placed so much significance on this particular series.

Great film! Remember it well.

Sorry I assumed everyone would know it was a film. I suppose younger forum members are not aware of the 1950s Anthony Mann/James Stewart series of westerns. All great.

Steve, I would not be surprised to find out that this was an inspiration for the story in Warlord as I remember watching that movie when I was on a James Stewart kick and thinking that the story from Winchester 73 was familiar for some reason, but at the time in the late 1980s, I could not put my finger on why it seemed so familiar. And thanks to you, now I can understand why the story was so familiar!
