Beating Dyslexia with Comics!

An interesting project that I read about in a disability magazine in hospital last week.

I would say that the tittle is a little misleading. You don't beat Dyslexia you have it all the time.

I am a Full card carrying Dyslexic and reading comics was a way I learned to read. When I was a kid I used to look at books with mainly text and the letters in the text used to jump around on the page making it hard to read. One of the things for a dyslexic is a lack of concentration so having to concentrate on a page of text and try and understand the jumble of text was not going to happen with me at the age of 6. Comic books would break up the text with the pictures. If I looked at the pictures to start with if the script was good I could tell the story from just that I started out with a big pile of Tiger, Battle, Eagle, Warlord and Victor comics and would look at the pictures for hours and would get the grasp of what was going on. I the started to learn to read just the speech bubbles and this gave me a bit more of the story. Lastly I learned to read narrative to get the whole story.
Comic books helped me keep my concentration and was a big part of me being able to read. The other thing that help was my Teacher (Mr Adams) would dictate a book to tape and I would listen to him in class on a walkman and follow along the words in the book.

I have to say that your post conceals that evidence. Well done indeed. Your local Education Authority should be paying you a decent salary to go round all the schools within their jurisdiction to help children in both Primary and Secondary schools, who are being hindered daily by a similar affliction.

I remember the walkman thing as a big thing in school at the time and my teacher had to by one out of his own pocket. a hefty wedge in the early 1980's.

not sure I could go round schools would end up killing one of the cheeky kids if they gave me to much lip. lol

It's funny you should mention Dyslexia as I ended up chatting with Rossie Stone last night as he is the founder of Dekko Comics. He created the comic to help him overcome his issues with dyslexia and to aid those with autism. We are going to be plugging his comic and his crowdfunding for an app so that comic fans who deal with either or both can then customise their digital comic to suit themselves.
