Martin Baxendale - what happened to him?

Post by stevezodiac »

Looking at a Whoopee Summer Special (bound for ebay) and noticed the Sweeny Toddler back page strip was drawn by Martin Baxendale. Is he still drawing?

He was still doing Kid Comic in 1985 for Whoopee (see example attached).

Interesting that he imitated the Sweeny Toddler artist Tom Paterson, style quite well. :)

Martin Baxendale writes and draws funny books like 'Life after 40' and 'Life after 50'. Like almost everyone else he was out of a job drawing comics once Fleetway finally closed down with the last Buster.
Not hard for him to imitate Tom Paterson! Tom Paterson imitated Martin's dad, Leo Baxendale, so I suppose it's fair!

My favourite Martin Baxendale strip was Deadly Headley in Buster, around 1980. Written by the late Mark Rodgers who went on to edit Oink!
