Adventure and war artist, who also drew 'Captain Scarlet; and 'Zero X' for TV21? If anyone knows if he's still around, or even better has a contact, I'd like to discuss his work with him...

Yes, Keith Watson drew for TV21 but so did an artist named Jim Watson, who had a less polished style than Keith. Jim was the artist on Captain Scarlet around Spring 1969. Years later he drew a strip about the Falklands War for Battle, but I've no idea where he is now.

There was another artist named Jim Watson who drew humour material. He used to illustrate the reader's jokes for Buster in the early 1980's.

Yes, I tracked down this other Jim Watson (who seemed to be around the same age/era, but I didn't know there were two!) some years back and wrote to him, and got the response 'I honestly don't know what you're talking about... '

Hi Shaqui
I think that the Jim Watson you are thinking of , worked for TV 21, and drew THE FALKLANDS WAR for Battle,he also did a strip about a Polar Bear in early issues of 2000 AD as I recall.
I believe that Jim is retired but paints watercolour seascapes, ships etc and lives around the Anstruther area of Scotland..thats all I know!

Tony, the above link is the only mention of Jim Watson that I can find on the 2000AD website.

With regards to the Falklands War story in Battle, I vaguely remember reading one episode in the mid 80's as I waited for a dental appointment! The story has always struck me as being inspired by the actions of Terry Peck, who was a secret agent for the UK forces during the Falklands War in 1982. But in Battle, the hero was a young boy of about 11 or 12. Here is the link to one of the most interesting books about that conflict. 8)

On my recent visit to that part of the world, I had hoped to meet Terry Peck, but alas, he was one of the post war victims of the thousands of mines that were left lying around the Islands!

Ah, I think you mean 'Shako', the polar bear that swallowed some top secret revice that had crashed in the Arctic - I don't recall him drawing that, though it had a bizarre rotation of artists, but I do recall 'Colony Earth' which he created, wrote and drew - it was this strip which alerted me (many moons ago now) to the fact he drew for TV21, as I rcognised his style from the annuals I had.

Colony Earth! Yes we are all thinking of the same artist. The Shako memory may be a mistake on my part or it was a similar artist in style. My friend Graham Manley (Dandy, Judge Dredd Megazine, D C Big Books) mentioned a few years ago that his wife had met Jim Watsons wife in Anstruther...Graham was unfamiliar with Jim Watsons work at the time...I still do not think they have met.

Did anyone ever get any further tracking down Jim Watson? I did some digging a while back and came across an art exhibition in the Anstruther area featuring work by one Mr Watson, at the golf club as I recall, but was unable to find out if they were one and the same. No sign of him on the Anstruther Golf Club Facebook page.

Would you believe I bumped into Graham Manley at SBA? If I had known of this connection, I would have asked then as I too would like to find Jim Watson as he did some cracking art for Victor in the late 70's/early 80's.

Jim was also a contributor to IPC's Monster Fun and produced some great comic artwork for Freaky Farm.

Take a look at http://kazoop.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/a- ... -farm.html for some well-scanned examples.

Unfortunately, as explained upthread, there are two Jim Watsons. I only ever knew of the humour artist myself.
