This morning I came across a Roy of the Rovers strip from the Daily Star dated 1991. The art is by Yvonne Hutton. It's unusual to see a female artist drawing a football strip. Does anyone know anything about her?

Yvonne Hutton was the mother of a good friend of mine. As far as I know she did all the Daily Star strips. Tragically, she died in a car accident.
Her Daughter has told me that she used to get her and her brother to pose like footballers so she could sketch them for her artwork. She also illustrated Durrell's Palace for RoTR, amongst others. I have, for some time been meaning to post some original artwork here. Must get round to it soon.

Yvonne Hutton was the regular Roy of the Rovers artist in the 70s prior to David Sque. I have some original art by her - the cover to the 21st anniversary issue of Tiger.

She drew Roy of the Rovers in Tiger for many years, Steve, and other strips. Plenty about her on the internet if you Google.

A good, distinctive artist who produced some of Tiger's most eye catching covers.

Right
Got to grips with it now. Hope they look ok. There are loads more once I get time. I'm sure forum members with far more knowledge than me will recognise which comics these are from.

Great to see that artwork, but a shame the pages are in such a state. Had they been stored in a shed or something?

They were stored in a loft, Lew.
Yes, it is a shame, but apparently there are loads more so hopefully some of them will be in a better state. I really should get down there and have a dig through them. I will try and prioritise in over the coming weeks.

I'm glad they were preserved anyway. So much artwork wasn't. Yvonne Hutton was a superb artist, often overlooked unfortunately. Good, solid work. Clearly IPC considered her one of their best to have given her Roy of the Rovers to illustrate (and to feature her work on so many Tiger covers).

I'm no expert on Yvonne Hutton's style (though coincidentally I did pick up a year's worth of Roy of the Rovers comics at a boot fair last weekend), but to my eye some of those pages look more like Eric Bradbury and Joe Colqhoun - possibly supplied for reference. Can anybody who's more familiar with her work positively identify the ones that Yvonne might have drawn herself?

Well I know from Yvonne's daughter that she illustrated Durrell's Palace for RoTR and the style is very different from the pictures I posted, so, looking at them again with my rookie eyes, I would say they are not by her.
It is quite exciting, as soon as I get a free Saturday i will try and get as many photographed as possible. They could do with being catalogued anyway, as all us comic collectors know!

Hi Darren,
Interesting art examples by Eric Bradbury and Joe Colquhoun. I think these were probably sent to Yvonne as test pieces for her to copy to see exactly where her strengths and weaknesses as an artist lay. BTW the Eric Bradbury 'Maxwell Hawke' page is from Buster dated 16th Jan 1965 and was part of the series ' Maxwell Hawke and the Phantom Zombie'.
