Damn! I go to update the comic libraries list for the first time in over 10 months, only to find that Webs will no longer allow uploading of HTML files unless you buy a premium account. Looks like I need to find a new host.

EDIT: OK, found one. My Comic Libraries list is now located at http://digifiend.altervista.org/comiclibs.html

Digi Would it be possible to email dct & ask them to send a complete list via email when they have time or perhaps one of the guys who work for them & post on here could get a list from someone in the offices so it can be put on the web site for refrence etc .Just my thought for the day :D

If they were willing to do the research for this, wouldn't they have already done it for The History of The Beano: The Story So Far and The Art and History of The Dandy?

I am speaking from experience, Digi, when I say that Thomsons have always responded positively to every request for help that I have ever made to them. Not only that, but they have also done the research and got back to me pretty quickly. However, they are a business, and therefore they hold to the principle that there is no such thing as a free lunch, so as I see it, they would certainly provide the information you need, but you would have to pay, as I did, for the researcher's time because they would have to stop work on the job they were doing in order to deal with your request.

DCT didn't have the complete lists in the books as they are not the main publications and more of a companion to both comics like the summer specials etc and the syndication dept are more than helpful on all matters Dandy and Beano related no harm in contacting them for the relevant info you require

I know lists wasn't in the books but they may have lists already stored for their own in house research & reference as we are now in the digital age it would make sense.

I understand that the index in the back of The History of The Beano was compiled by Ray Moore, not the Beano staff. I doubt Thomsons have a list of contents of the various comics they've produced over the years. It wouldn't be worth their time.

Yes, as I understand it, Thomsons didn't have the information they needed beyond the end of 1989 where Ray's book The Beano Diaries finished, so they contacted him to find out if he had the necessary information to allow them to update his details to the beginning of August 2008, and if so, could he let them have it. He had and he did.

I do know that DCT have a huge Dandy Archive but it is incomplete mainly in the original art section and some editorial cover proofs aren't in Dundee anymore but the rest they do have copies of the weekly comics (bound in yearly volumes)annuals (they have 2 of each) summer specials and the comic libraries too but these could go astray I suppose probably the same for the Beano too...

And with Commando, Starblazer, Football, Bunty, Judy, My Weekly and People's Friend, they've probably got over 7000 libraries to sort through (Commando is more than 4000 alone) to find the 1400 or so that are relevant to my list. Anyway, as has been pointed out, they would charge for doing the search, and they used a third party researcher when they needed the information for their own books. Bear in mind that this is a fan project, I don't even pay for hosting (that's why I just moved it, Webs wanted to charge for uploading html files).

I can't understand why Thomsons' researchers would need to bother at all with the titles you mention, Digi, when all you would be asking them to do would be to fill in the gaps on your Beano and Dandy comic library lists. They may not have lists to hand, but I'm sure the issues themselves will be filed separately and appropriately. By the way, can I just point out that you omitted the Debbie and Mandy comic libraries from your list.

I think it depends on the nature of the research required - it isn't terribly difficult to answer questions about a particular issue, but trawling through hundreds or thousands of issues to find one thing is a lot more complicated and would cost a great deal more than the price of an invoice.

DCT have copies of Ray's indexes, simply because they are so incredibly useful!

I've a little more info for you. Beano 72, Dandy 21 and Dandy 57 cover artwork was all by Steve Bright.

All I can help you with for the Beano specials for now is that issues 89, 107 and 111 were all Dennis the Menace, and although I no longer have copies, at least the latter two were adaptations of the TV series if not 89 as well.
