Identify the Commando issue?

Post by crow »

Hi.
I've just published a photostat of a José Jorge page from Commando on my blog. Can anyone identify the story the page comes from? I received it in the early 80s after sending a letter to Commando.

Cheers.

Could be "Family Of Heroes" which is issue 1216, but it was published in 1978

Hey.
Thanks for the reply.
I'm assuming it might just have been a random page he at hand at the time. Not necessarily from the 80's. I'm hoping one of you out there recognises it.

Cheers.

That's also issue 2500, from 1991, which should make it easier to find if you want to buy it from ebay or something. http://www.britishcomics.20m.com/com1978.htm

Not sure what the story is, but it will have been one that was under construction when you wrote. In those days there was no "naked" artwork in the office for any length of time as it was ballooned (straight on to the artwork) pretty much as soon as it arrived from Argentina or wherever. This also means it's unlikely to be from a book reprinted at that time as that artwork would have balloons and panels on it from its earlier publication.

With our electronic ballooning, these days the artwork isn't touched at all; simply scanned and dropped into a Quark template to have the text overlaid.

If you wrote in the early 80s, the man in the hot seat was Ian Forbes, George didn't take over until the end of the decade when Ian retired.

Here's a list of all of Jose Jorge's Commandos (scroll to the bottom):

Not quite all, as he is still drawing new ones to this day. Issue 4000 was one of his, for instance.

As I have been doing a bit more un-boxing, I came across this issue which I must have picked up at some point. So I just had to have a read and voila, the page of art that started this thread is from Family Of Heroes and is page 15 depicting the death of Hector Stanley, the great-grandfather of Peter Stanley. An unusual story in that it is one of the first that deals with not one war but three wars. These being World War II, World War I and the Boer War.

Don't try to identify this one — it's not been printed yet. But it does show that José Maria Jorge is still at the top of his game despite the years that have passed since he Illustrated "Family Of Heroes."
