I wonder what will replace the Black Sapper hopefully another adventure story...it had some nice headers...liked the circus poster ripped...and the 2 headed Sapper looking at an empty field then a circus tent.
cough...Jellymen..Cough!
on a side note the Topper had on the cover info of the castles in the air
1961 Oct 28th No.456 a thriller always make me wonder what the strip is like these little front cover ads..
Nice reading great flood and Jonah..

Re: Classics from the comics do it yourself...
It'd be interesting to see The Jellymen. I don't think I ever read that. Although my personal choices would be either The Umbrella Men by Charlie Grigg, or The Stinging Swarm by Jack Glass, both from the 1960s Dandy.Peter Gray wrote:I wonder what will replace the Black Sapper hopefully another adventure story...

It'd be a good balance to have three regular adventure strips per issue, I think. (Great Flood, Jellymen, Stinging Swarm.) A 64 page comic could support that without putting off the readers who only like the funnies, in my opinion.

What was The Umbrella Men about?
Classics from the comics do it yourself...
I'll check out 'The Umbrella Men' but from memory it was about a gang of masked crooks dressed as city gents, complete with bowler hats, pin-stripe pants and umbrellas who could use said umbrellas to not only release knock-out gas from their metal points but also have them double as devices they could use to fly in a malevolent Mary Poppins kind of way.

Hmm, wasn't a jewellry heist recently pulled off because the crooks where dressed in sharp suits with umbrellas and drove up in a really flash (stolen) car, so got waved straight in?

Hmmm - sounds a bit like something from The Avengers. (British TV series not American Marvel superhero comic.)

Checked out the details of 'The Umbrella Men'. It ran in the Dandy from Dec 1965 to Aug 1966 and the hero of the piece was a young lad named Toby Judd. It also featured in the Dandy Summer Special for 1966 and the Dandy Book for 1967.

Hope this will satisfy your curiousity Peter. 'Castles in the Air' featured in Topper Nos 456-469 and was about a family who owned and ran a one-plane air service in northern Canada. It was drawn by H R Platt and also turned up in the 1964 Topper Book.

That's right. Thomsons could always be relied on to provide memorable imagery for their adventure strips in The Dandy. I'll be blogging about this strip and other Dandy adventure strips soon on my Blimey! blog, when I have time to write the article.Kashgar wrote:I'll check out 'The Umbrella Men' but from memory it was about a gang of masked crooks dressed as city gents, complete with bowler hats, pin-stripe pants and umbrellas who could use said umbrellas to not only release knock-out gas from their metal points but also have them double as devices they could use to fly in a malevolent Mary Poppins kind of way.

Re: Classics from the comics do it yourself...
Classics in the new issue seems to be censoring the slipper in Dennis the Menace .the bottom panel has been altered...what a shame...
I like the idea of more background information.longer stories and I wonder what the feature would be like.....a whole issue dedicated to Jonah...Ken Reid..a birthday issue of The Beezer...a character..
If the Classics editor is reading this less Calamity Kate...Nobby.. yawn and more Jellymen..Les Barton's serial I-Spy....early 60's...love to also see The Moonsters by Bill Ritchie

I was worried when I read "Important News Inside", it's a slogan that usually portended something a bit more ominous!

I was the same, ANDY.....I fully expected to see a 'this is the final issue ' notice inside!---happily, it still continues.....I've actually wrote to them a couple of times asking for requests, to no avail...maybe I'll e-mail some suggestions in.
