ADVENTURE HOLIDAY SPECIAL

I was going through a crate of comics Wednesday night and came across a bag full of Summer Specials. Among them was this curio. What makes it different is that all the stories are text with a centre spread of football player pictures. Text stories are a mixture of football, sci fi and sword and scorcery/fantasy. I don't recognise the artists doing the illustrations for the text stories. Published in 1987.

Could you please list the story titles and their main character for us, Steve.

Here's the back cover with a handy synopsis.

In Mission Impossibe Nick Frew is the pilot and Major Ben Peel is the SAS agent out to find the plane. Sounds like the film Firefox.

Bearpaw Jay is the hero of Dead Indian Peak

Its a glossy Summer Special format comic by the way.

The Bearpaw Jay illustration inisde with the bazooka is by Ian Kennedy. I know as I have the original somewhere...

I agree that it is very unusual as text based stories were almost non-existent by then.

Thank you very much indeed for that information, Steve. And Colin, is the Ian Kennedy illustration that you mention the only piece of his original artwork that you own? I remember that some years ago you did show me one piece of his that you were delighted to acquire, but I can't remember offhand which it was, or what you told me about it.

The other two are prints. One is the cover of Walrus To The Rescue issues 913 and 2252 that was signed. And the other is the limited edition Battle Of Britain print. I bought one of the first run of 5. I notice that there must have been a second run as The Book Palace have it listed as a run of 100.

Of course it goes without saying that the amazing Mr Kennedy also painted the cover for that Special (...though I'm saying it anyway).

Thank you, Colin. It was the Battle Of Britain print, I now recall.

Its a much underrated comic. I was surprised how enjoyable it was upon rereading. This special also looks terrific mind you.
