Funnily enough I was going to mention the Guardian but plumped for the Independant for it's less radical views, playing it safe I guessPhoenix wrote:As a socialist, abacus, I could be a reader of The Independent but never of The Times. Actually, you lot are lucky being in Britain where there's a newspaper for every shade of opinion. In Victoria, we have only two choices in papers; awful or so-so.

Well I did in the 1960s. These days I don't stick to one paper. I never buy The Sun or the Mail though unless I'm quoted in them (or misquoted, more likely).abacus wrote: Remarks seem very sniffy about newspapers.I know Lew reads the daily mirror

Re: Racist Daily Mail
I stopped reading papers altogether about 10 years ago: I remember this in detail...it was a large double-spreader about Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher buying a fish supper near a park in London, with exclusive photos taken in secret, using powerful telephoto lenses, all lovingly reproduced in full colour.
Dunno, maybe they were just hard up for news that week: but this was a moment that changed my newspaper-reading habits forever: I disntinctly remember realizing:
-----WHY am I reading this trivia?
WHY am I PAYING to read this trivia?
WHAT is wrong with civilization, that so many people seem to want to read this dross?
Now I am not claiming that ALL newspaper articles are as weak as the one I describe above, but I have never quite took papers quite so seriously since, after the above discovery in the Nations' newspaper reading- diet.

I don't understand newspapers' obsession for one direction - a group of singers aimed at the toddler market? Do adults want to read about them?
You often see photos of stars and it says "looking miserable" but how many people go about their day to day lives with a Joker type grin spread across their boats?

You should be able to relax soon, Steve. Apparently the group are in the process of disbanding. The salesmen in Joe Macari's in Wandsworth will surely be rubbing their hands and licking their lips in the hopes that the four currently remaining members will pop down there individually during the massive amount of spare time they are about to acquire in order to spend some of their moolah on vintage Maseratis, Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis and the like. Mind you, Doc Brown's gull-winged DeLorean used in the Back To The Future films, which was in the showroom a couple of weeks ago, might even need saving up for.stevezodiac wrote:I don't understand newspapers' obsession for one direction - a group of singers aimed at the toddler market? I understood they were having a hiatus to pursue solo projects. What I say is only four people could have made up the Beatles but with these boy bands three or four could leave and easily be replaced by three or four similar clones - its just good looks really. All four Beatles could play Guitar and Piano and act as a Producer on recordings. Boy bands just sing whatever is put in front of them - The Rolling Stones are still going 50 years after forming - not for the money but because they love what they do. Most modern stars just want to be famous.

I blame what might be termed the Simon Cowell syndrome.stevezodiac wrote:Most modern stars just want to be famous.

I gave up around the same time but not after reading the same article. I can honestly say I haven't bought a paper for at least 10 years and haven't missed them once. I still read the Metro and Standard each week when in London, like today but I have a strong dislike for celebrity for the sake of celebrity and that ruined newspapers for me.
Re: Racist Daily Mail
When I buy a paper nowadays it's mainly for the crossword!

Re: Racist Daily Mail
I saw Cameron's wishy washy "demands" to the EU this afternoon and e-mailed the Sun suggesting they give a Sergeant Wilson slant to the story along the lines of "Would you mind awfully...?" as I think it sums up the PMs stance perfectly. I don't expect the Sun to follow my suggestion but I thought it was a good idea - probably more suited to a political cartoon though.
Re: Racist Daily Mail
If you're a Guardian reader, I'd have thought you would get The Observer on Sundays, as that's The Guardian's Sunday counterpart (like News of the World used to be for The Sun).Phoenix wrote:As a socialist, abacus, I could be a reader of The Independent but never of The Times. Re: Racist Daily Mail
You are, of course, quite correct, Digi, and I always used to get The Observer until a couple of years or so ago when I decided to make Sunday a politics-free day. Like The Daily Mirror, The Sunday Mirror is a socialist paper, but crucially its coverage of sport, especially football, is outstanding, and far more comprehensive than that in The Observer.Digifiend wrote:If you're a Guardian reader, I'd have thought you would get The Observer on Sundays, as that's The Guardian's Sunday counterpart (like News of the World used to be for The Sun).

Re: Racist Daily Mail
One of the papers senior editors often appears on Sky's `Newspaper` reviews! He's so right wing (in my view) he's make Adolf Hitler look like a communist by comparison! Slight exaggeration there-but not that far off!
A Face unclouded by thought.
