There is an announcement in The Guardian today concerning the death, apparently in Oxford, on 31 January of Gillian Avery, the writer of a number of novels for children, and some analytical works about children's literature, such as Nineteenth Century Children (1965) and Childhood's Pattern - A Study Of The Heroes And Heroines Of Children's Fiction 1770 - 1950 (1975). She was 89. Presumably she had been suffering from Alzheimer's as non-family members are asked to make donations, if they so desire, to Alzheimer's Society, c/o S&R Childs Funeral Services, 69 London Road, Headington OX3 9AA. For anyone interested in attending, the funeral will take place at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford at 11.30 a.m. on Friday 26 February.
