SCORCHER N' SCORE

Post by Old Forum Fella »

A visit to the Gallery here has sparked off memories of this title . It was the first comic I collected ( long gone , of course! ) and had about 150.
It was the early 70's and this comic came out with a free " League Ladder "!!! It had to be mine! This Cardboard sheet had 92 slots fir the teams , which were represented by cardboard tabs. On Sunday mornings it became a ritual to rearrange the League tables and I kept it up for...about three weeks! This was when my team Derby County were top of the League ( Younger readers may wish to laugh at this point! )

The comic itself was wall to wall football strips , and none of your hanky-panky like that fella in The Sun ( Striker?? ). No, it was all footie ranging from the serious to the Comic. Who can forget Jimmy of City's Crazy " Chevron " Strip ( well , it was the 70's ! ). Who can forget the immobile " Ron Harris " style hair of Bobby of the Blues. Who can forget Jack of United's miniskirted sister who wore Go-Go Boots! ( I know I cant ! )

Anyone else have fond memories ( please tell me i wasnt the only teenager wrestling with the League Ladder ).

SCORCHER N' SCORE

I'm sure my friend had something similar with Shoot. Myself I was never much into football, although still used to buy the odd comic, especially when it had those Panini stickers free! Used to collect the Football All-stars which came free with crisp packets! Remember Sepp Maier having a great pose!.... anyway, straying from the comic thread there! Scorcher was JUST before my time so missed out on this comics release... Lasting just over a year and then, as with most comics, the dreaded MERGER.

'Exciting news inside for all readers!'
'Now all your favourite stories in one comic!'
oh, that merger!

I can remember league ladders being given away with Tiger as well as Shoot!, with the obligatory nod to Scottish football (which even had a few decent teams then!) As for football cards, I thought I was the only one who had loads of Willie Pettigrew of Motherwell until I talked with a friend who grew up in Surrey - he had the same player turning up time and time again too!

I this where I mention the Scorcher comics available in the British section of the Superhero Store

Seeing as I am in the mood I looked up Willie Pettigrew and found he started his career at Bonkle Amateurs
Now if that isnt a Comic title , I dont know what is ! " Willie of Bonkle "- it has a ring to it.

I remember Score 'n' Roar. Two comics in one like Whizzer & Chips. It became just Score and then was amalgamated with Scorcher. Steve
