TV Fun No.1

Post by Lew Stringer »

Apologies if this should be in the reference section but as it's about a retired comic, and a first issue, I thought more people might see it here. Last week I bought the first issue of TV Fun from 1953, so I thought I'd show a few pages on my blog:

I think I was the only person who bid on it. Condition is very nice. A few very tiny tears at the edges about 1cm at most, and the spine is a little worn in places but all intact. Natural cream coloured paper, not browned. It must have been kept out of direct sunlight and away from people who eat jam sarnies while they read.

Always loved TV Fun, Lew. A really nice bargain.
The 'Put Your Question' strip was actually drawn by Swedish born Alex Akerbladh.
and, as far as is known, this was the last strip he worked on for the AP.
The Call in the Yard' strip was illustrated by Harry Farrugia. The Maltese born artist who the AP had employed since the late 1940's as, originally, a George Heath copyist but who in the end turned out to be much more than that.
In fact both Heath and Akerbladh were, their talent apart, troublesome to the editors they worked for at the AP. Heath for his general demeanour and Akerbladh for the untidy, messy way he presented his work.

Thanks Ray! For ages I studied the page wondering if it was Akerbladh, but some gestures and shading convinced me it was by Price. I'll go and correct it. Thanks again.

With the growing popularity of television in the 1950s I suppose it was an obvious step for AP to add TV Fun to their existing line-up of Film Fun and Radio Fun. If all three were still being published today no doubt they'd have been joined by a fourth companion called 'Computer Fun'. :)

Well, they did publish Sonic the Comic successfully for several years in the 1990s which was pretty much the sort of thing you're thinking of. :D

It's mind-boggling to think that when Film Fun was launched in January 1920 (still just about within living memory) even commercial radio was a futuristic concept, whereas TV and computers hadn't been thought of. Kind of makes you wonder what the next big thing will be in entertainment media. Virtual Reality Fun perhaps?
