This is an interesting article, documenting an unusual spin on the concept of the 'TV tie-in comic'. Apparently Chips' Comic was a TV programme for young children in which the characters were seen 'preparing' issues of the titular magazine that really were available to buy.

Never heard of it myself.

I think I may have had one of the annuals but I can't remember whether I had any of the weekly comics. If I remember correctly, the Chips' Comic TV programme was one of the first things to appear on the newly launched Channel 4.

Why did they call it Chips anyway? Wouldn't it have been confused with Whizzer and Chips by some people?

No is the short answer. The reason they would have called it Chips is because computer chips were a very new thing for a lot of people and more the scope of Tomorrow's World rather than the scope of a programme aimed at the 5-10 market. So it would have seemed very trendy and relevant at the time.

I have very vague memories of not watching this as it was aimed at the junior market and as a teenager who already knew he was a bit geeky, I had to avoid making myself any more geeky than I already was!
