Gosh - It all seems so long ago now! Jim Shooter gets a lot of stick but one tends to forget how revolutionary (and how controversial) that first SW series was. I probably had every one of those at one time, though I've since got rid of most of them.

In a way I guess all the comics that featured Spider-Man's sentient black costume could be thought of as a kind of spin-off. :?

So revolutionary but I had still forgotten. At the time, working in a comic shop, I was amazed at the sales for the start of the series. But even though I was and still am a fan of umpteen superheroes in the one comic, I started to realise that this might be a cynical marketing ploy. Like Phil, I no longer have thise comics, apart from the first few issue of the main series.
Superhero groups and team ups have always been popular, hence the ongoing fascinationmwith LSH. But I stll enjoy those old Archie/Radio Comics, Mighty Crusaders. Corny, with not whatnyou would term the best art, but highly entertaining.
Now I think about it, Defenders had that short series of stories, Too Many Superheroes, and that was good fun.

I still can't see those old ads for Brave and the Bold no.28 without feeling a tingle of excitement run down my spine:

"Just imagine, the mightiest heroes of our time have banded together as the Justice League of America to stamp out evil wherever and whenever it appears!"

Stirring stuff! :)

That is an interesting point Phil R. One I will mull over, which if I do include them to collect, I have no idea which issues incuded the black costume.

Interesting really that I see lots of Ebay SW Black costume auctions claiming that it was the first appereance. Issue and date wise, it wasnt of course, it was Amazing Spiderman 252. Now of course this was his return from Battleworld so chronology wise within the story it is after his first SW appareance!

New Avengers: Illuminati (2006) #3
Published: May 30, 2007

THE MEGA SMASH MINI SERIES IS BACK!! Years ago a mysterious creature called the Beyonder gathered the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe for an epic called SECRET WARS. Now, finally, after decades of mystery, the TRUE origin of this powerful creature is revealed when the Illuminati try to stop the Beyonder from interfering with the Earth once more. What powerful connection does the Beyonder's true origin have to one of the power players of the Illuminati? Another stunner from Bendis (NEW AVENGERS, MIGHTY AVENGERS) Reed (MS. MARVEL) and Jim Cheung (YOUNG AVENGERS) 32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99 less

Just found this, while doing some research. This is not on my list. Was this a one shot issue? Does anyone have any other additions I may have missed? Are there any other 'Beyonder' appearances apart from the above listed and this new found one?

Cheers

The Beyonder appearance in the Illuminati storyline was his last to date, and it's a controversial one in that it gives him an entirely new origin story which basically doesn't make much sense and totally contradicts several dozen comics published in the eighties. Bendis has a tendency to do things like this, he's not big on continuity. A lot of Marvel readers tend to just choose to ignore this story.

ILLUMINATI is pretty good as a mini-series - the artwork is gorgeous -but it basically serves as a prelude to SECRET INVASION and does re-write the Beyonder as a mutant Inhuman, if I remember it correctly. Which is indeed daft.
