Metal Men – not forgotten

I was checking out the estimated value of some of mine and brother(s) comics recently.

DC’s Metal Men issues 1-56 are apparently worth £1,370 (VFN for all issues) according to the http://www.comicpriceguide.co.uk/us_com ... =metalmen1 – though this is likely to be a conservative estimate for the better conditioned issues. Bro only has a few of the '70s issues in poor condition.

The title started in the 'Silver Age' and is well remembered. I recall one of the later issues having some superb Simonson art (possibly 45). Then apart from Brave and the Bold 187 (1982) and a short 4-issue run in Metal Men, vol. 2, 1-4, Oct. 1993 - Jan. 1994 the heroes have only popped up a few times in comics since.

Apparently there was speculation for a while that Warner Bros would make a film. Does anyone else remember them and/or other 'silver age' USA comic titles or is this of more interest to the US only?

I was a Metal Men fan. But then. I'm a nut for many DC titles of the '60's. Particularly Doom Patrol, Teen Titans with that lovely Nick Cardy art (helped along in a couple of issues by Adams) and the corny but good fun Martian Manhunter. I didn't know that story about the movie. It could certainly be done nowadays but it would be relevant with long discussions about "problems" and not so much fun. Can't comment on the value because, although I have an American guide, it's years out of date and I use it for info and research.
They started out in Showcase and I'm sure there was a crossover with the Doom Patrol in each others title. Not near my guide right now so can't check.

I read DC more in the 70s/80s. Whenever they appeared in a Team-Up, the Metal Men always seemed to be met with a lot of 'Awwww's due to a certain charm and nostalgia. I have to admit, it was lost on me. They just never fitted the more serious superhero universe (and I'm talking pre-Watchmen/Dark Knight) of the Bronze Age. Just too silly for it. So, unfortunately, not too much affection for me.

I absolutely hated Tin. The character just looked so goofy, he was totally out of place in the DC Universe of the 1970s and 1980s.

O.K. All this made me dig out some issues and have a re-read. Seems as if the judgements on the title - and Tin - are based on the '70's and '80's, or at least how Metal Men stacked up in the "more relevant" later decades. But re-reading those comics last night was a very enjoyable experience. They were published in the early to late '60's and in my opinion, still work. Decent stories, very competantly drawn, humour, action and, to my mind, good interaction between the metals and Magnus.
Just to correct a mistake, I suggested a crossover between MM and Doom Patrol, and of course there was no such thing. Doom Patrol crossed over with Challengers of The Unknown. If I had a memory, I'd be dangerous.

If people found Tin hard to cope with goodness knows what they thought of his girlfriend 'Nameless'! I thought the Metal Men were great, though the best issues were probably the Showcase tryouts and the first ten stories in their own title - after that Kanigher got a bit repetitive. There were, however, two marvellous issues right at the end of the original run drawn by Gil Kane.

Metal men were my all time top DC team ups, over the years I have slowly been trying to obtain all the issues that the metal men have been in, I was well happy when DC printed the two volume showcase presents of the metal men

I have dozens of the DC Showcase volumes but not one for Metal Men. I'll look out for it at the next comic fair. I have one or two of the original comics but don't think I ever bothered to read them. Same goes for Doom Patrol.
