Post by Peter Gray »

I love seeing Keith R's work a lovely addition to the paper...also Wing can be very funny.like the new one with the beer lover choosing beer pumps for taps..
Also love seeing a whole page of funnies in the paper..its like the old days..maybe other paper should do the same..

Yes I always remember when we had Weekend, Titbits and Reveille which had a cartoon on almost every page and a whole page of them at the back of Weekend. Also the Daily Mirror had its Laughter column of about six cartoons but that vanished about 15 years ago. The Sun still has a small box of about three cartoons but they are really small print. I'd buy the Weekly News if it had no cartoons because its such a wholseome and old fashioned paper. i hope to submit some cartoons one day just a bit lazy about drawing them up. I lack confidence even though some of the cartoons they publish are quite amateurish. I'm a perfectionist i'm afraid.

The Daily Mirror was a superb newspaper in its heyday, for news and comic strips & cartoons. I eagerly read Garth, The Flutters, and Andy Capp etc throughout the sixties/early seventies. I'm afraid I'm one of the few who preferred Steve Dowling/John Allard's Garth to the Bellamy/Asbury versions.

Good cartoons too, including Jack Greenhall's Useless Eustace.

When Piers Morgan was editing the Mirror several years ago I remember an interview with him where he actually criticised the paper for having a page of strips and a half page of cartoons and vowed it would never happen on his watch. He thought it was a weakness of the paper to have so many cartoons in it! I think it may have been him who dropped Laughter, so he was even an a*se back in those days. Today, the Mirror strips page is stagnant. Andy Capp is still fun but the rest of the page really needs something new.

Is the UK newspaper strip a dying art? I certainly miss The Perishers from The Mirror.

As an aside, has anyone joined Ulrika's Fan Club (from Scorer)? Why does that exist? Who is Ulrika's Fan Club aimed at?!

Albion's Saddest Boring Onanist Society, members of which get turned on by a drawing of a semi-clad woman
Horace is good fun, but they should re-instate its full title (A Man Called Horace).
I cannot stand Pooch Cafe. The central character is thoroughly detestable. If the Mirror wants a strip with a dog in it they could do worse than re-print old Perishers runs. Infinitely more charming, engaging and artistically executed, in my view. I bloomin' 'ates Pooch Cafe. Good ole Boot!

People who like to put up posters of the cartoon beauty maybe? ;) I don't get it either.

I wish they'd do this. I'm glad they didn't just continue the strip with a new team a la post-Smythe Andy Capp, but they have decades of old material to reprint. It'd be cheaper than buying in Pooch Cafe, right?

I think I've mentioned this before, but Keith Reynolds drew Tom, Dick and Sally and Tim Traveller (after Vic Neill's death) in the Beano.

POOCH CAFE is quite stylish, but too surrealistic for many readers....nothing wrong with surrealism in comics of course, but some strips such as this one often seems oddball and obscure just for the sake of it.......in it's favour, it's unique and instantly recognizable......not my favourite strip, though.....

for the uninitiated, here's a more accessible edition;

The other Mirror comic strips can be viewed here: http://www.mirror.co.uk/fun-games/cartoons/

For some reason Pooch Cafe is missing, syndication can't be the reason because The Sun's website lets you view Hagar the Horrible, which is also syndicated. :?:

For some reason Andy Capp can't be accessed - it displays Horace instead. :?

The Sun's fun page - http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/fun/ - you need to scroll down a fair bit. They really should remove that link to The Premier (it's an external link). Striker isn't there, but you can view 22 George & Lynne strips, and 23 of Hagar the Horrible.
