Re: Newspaper comic strips
The Eyeballs in the Sky were actually a regular recurring theme right up until the strip ended in 2005, in fact. They even generated their own record! Altogether now:
There is something up on high which looks down on you and I
The eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
It's the cosmic peeping Tom, and there's nowhere to hide from
The eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
So you crabs beware of that cosmic stare
There are naughty things you'd like to do, but you don't dare
And that scrutinizing gaze has us living in a daze
The eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
There's no deed we can disguise from them transcendental eyes
The eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
So we're getting rather short of the pooliversal sport
The eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
If you don't relate, they'll seal your fate, and you'll end up spread out on a seafood plate
So we have to nod and smile though we want to run a mile
From the eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
Because constantly they pry, from their umpire seat on high
The eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
We have changed our crabby ways, and no crabby games we plays
The eyeballs, the eyeballs in the sky!
No prawnography for you or me, or we'll end up in the crabmeat factory
So by night and day we pray that they'll up and go away
Then we can hide it from the eyeballs in the sky.

great kitsch value [and certainly not bland!] I will see if I can locate this 'waxing' on the web!

I've had a look at this site for the first time, Steelclaw, and I agree, it's well worth a look.

Anybody else recall the excellent Perishers animated series with Leonard Rossiter?

Re: Newspaper comic strips
It was quite close to the original strip version, Tony......quite an acievement, given the detailed personal vision evident in the original.
Re: Newspaper comic strips
A brilliant newspaper syndicated strip from the US of A, which I get in my email inbox each loverly day, is the fantastic GET FUZZY.
Starring Bucky Katt, a wise-cracking, dog hating, thinks he's the centre of the universe, Republican Siamese cat. Satchel, a well-meaning, intelligence deprived, canadian labrador. And Rob, the stressed-out owner, Democrat voting, advertising exec.
Worth checking them out at Comics Dot Com

Re: Newspaper comic strips
Seems unbelievable now but the Daily Mirror of the 70’s had FOUR great strips in it; The Perishers, Garth, Andy Capp and my own favourite the Fosdyke Saga. I also vaguely remember they had a weekly gardening strip called Mr Crabtree or somesuch. Then along came Cap’n Bob!

Re: Newspaper comic strips
I think it was Piers Morgan who had the anti-comics attitude. Garth and The Perishers ended under his editorship.grumpy old man wrote:Seems unbelievable now but the Daily Mirror of the 70’s had FOUR great strips in it; The Perishers, Garth, Andy Capp and my own favourite the Fosdyke Saga. When he was editor he wrote that in John Pilger's day the paper had a page and a half of comics/cartoons and that would never happen under his editorship. Even though Morgan left years ago the comics page is still moribund and the Laughter cartoon section still absent.

Re: Newspaper comic strips
At least the Mirror still has a full page of comics (well, almost, that and the horoscopes). Unlike The Sun, which replaced Striker with VIRALS! Most of them are boring, although one of today's reminded me of Gnasher! A yellow and black road sign showing a silhouetted dog biting someone's bum.
Re: Newspaper comic strips
The Sun rose as a fully-fledged newspaper out of the ashes of the respected Daily Herald but now does seem to be setting as little more than a nudespaper.Digifiend wrote:At least the Mirror still has a full page of comics (well, almost, that and the horoscopes). Unlike The Sun

Re: Newspaper comic strips
At it's worst, the SUN aspires to equal the DAILY SPORT....
----at it's best, it's a 'comic' for the masses without actual cartoons [well, not many, at any rate].
GET FUZZY----I've definately heard of it, skyromie, and I know it has a loyal fanbase-----seems drawn to a larger scale than most of today's newspaper strips, and looks better for it.

Re: Newspaper comic strips
when I was young, there was a raunchy strip in the SUN called bear, which was by POSY SIMMONDS. It was about nursery toys who got up to 'adult' exploits, shall we say, and very much an early 70s endeavour......
I was quite surprised later on to find out it was a woman who drew this [this was before I discovered that women actually enjoy sex as well as us blokes.]
I can't find examples of bear anywhere on the web: a shame, as I remember it well, but POSY SIMMONDS-----who I can't ever recall ever being mentioned on here ----is now an illustrator of some note, as evidenced here:

I'm not entirely sure of how large Darby Conley's fanbase is, but it gives me a chuckle every day. This one was yesterdays, Bucky is also famous in his own littertray and comes up with 'genius' ideas all the time.

Re: Newspaper comic strips
GET FUZZY always seems to feature quite high in popularity polls of US strips, which is where I recognize the name from.......
it's pretty good, I could get used to it!
