I was a fan of this strip when young and my dad brought the Daily Express home each evening. Haven't seen it in a long time, then I found this:-

There doesn't seem to be much else out there on it. Shame

Ah, but just think of the anticipatory pleasure and excitement you will have seeking out those 48 annuals.

Oddly enough there was also a Barry Appleby who drew for IPC and DC Thomson (eg Roger the Dodger) during the 1970s and 1980s, but to the best of my knowledge this was a completely different artist!

The Gambols are still doing strong in the Mail on Sunday with new strips. Forget the name of the artist though.

Different spelling too. Barrie Appleby is still working, drawing Roger the Dodger every week, as well as other strips.

1980s? Are you sure it wasn't Barrie who did the DCT/IPC comics work? He was drawing Cuddles in 1981 (I think that's when it started) for Nutty.

The Gambols has a Wikipedia page, but it doesn't mention the current artist, only that Barry Appleby did it until 1996 (alongside his wife Dobs until 1985), then Roger Maloney took over until it moved to the Mail on Sunday in 1999.

No one's saying that. I was just confirming that the artist of The Gambols (Barry Appleby) was a different person to the DCT/IPC artist Barrie Appleby.

You're right of course Lew - I was initially misled by the spelling of Barrie's name on the Lambiek site. As for Barry, I think he also started out in comics by taking over Basil Reynolds' 'Skit & Skat' strip in Mickey Mouse Weekly during the war.

You mean just Mickey Mouse. It wasn't weekly during the war! :P
