1960s/1970s strip in the Sun about finding a mouse

Post by TwoHeadedBoy »

Someone in work was telling me about a comic strip she used to enjoy reading in the Sun (of all things!) when she was younger, so this would've been the 1960s or 1970s. She didn't remember much of it, just that in each one you had to find a mouse that was hiding somewhere.

Anyone have the faintest idea what she's on about?

These were the large single panel cartoons by Paul Rigby - he would hide a little animal in it each day. Not sure if it was a mouse or not. I have an album of his cartoons and I will try to find it. Franklin did a similar thing with a big nosed little man and a pigeon which appeared every day but they were not exactly hidden just present in the cartoon.

Have since googled him and you can find him on the web easily enough.

According to Wikipedia, it was a dog, not a mouse. His cartoons were in The Sun from 1969 to 1974.

A small, concealed mouse was also the trademark of painter Terence Cuneo, who started out as an illustrator for the old story papers. I don't think he ever worked for the Sun though.

With Rigby's dog I think you only ever saw the head and ears poking out and there was a little boy too.

There's a large scan of a Rigby cartoon here: http://cradledincaricature.files.wordpr ... /23585.jpg

I'll let you find the boy and the dog yourselves!

Thanks a lot for all that information there - next time I see her (which'll be next Sunday) I'll see if this is what she was talking about :)
