if you were editor of The Beano what would you do...

Discuss or comment on anything relating to D.C.Thomson's second longest running comic. The home of Dennis the Menace. Has been running since 1938.

I would have a feature where old characters come back for one off stories drawn by Tom Paterson......like Jonah...Pansy Potter in Wonderland..Tom Thumb...Jimmy and his magic patch..Lord Snooty..Biffo..a bit like the Beanomax feature with Tom drawing Jack Flash.......I was hoping that every month would be a new classic character...or like in the past a reader request page for old favourites to appear for a one off...Tom did a nice one when he drew Ping in the 60th Beano comic in a Minnie story..

Love to see a comic artist drawing a busy scene every week..Ken did a good job on the Hoot Squad..

I like to see Dennis interacting more with the reader more....like playing with the Beano's new free gift...eating the sweets..etc...
loved the Gnasher gone missing episode...and Softy Walter doing his karate in a running episode.....so more stories that are longer and run for weeks.......liked the Smiffyities done in the 90's....

There should be more theme issues.....like Sports day...London marathon..Easter special..panto special..etc... loved it when all the characters are at the same event...or a continuing story...

the comic relief Beanomax special was great with all the celebraties...so in a way it is being done here...like to see this also happen in the main comic

An original adventure story should start....and always in The Beano...

If the comic has to have reprints or a drop in pages........then I would make it obvious by calling it classic...and looking further back..

I would do a feature on the comic cartoonists who draw for The Beano..

I would....
  • Put in one reprint every week and call it "The Classic Comic"
  • Use long running stories
  • Have as Peter said a page where you find out about the people behind the scenes, like the Ivy the Terrible story in 1995 book
  • Use MUCH less feature pages
  • Put in a few new comic strips
  • Give Dennis the Menace slightly longer shorts and trainers instead of "clompy" boots

The Beano has a new logo?

(None of our 3 local shops have it this week.)

Very kind of you Conor. Much appreciated.

Hmm. Not sure it works myself. Maybe it'll grow on me.

Managed to buy a copy of The Beano. Now I've seen the revamped logo in context I quite like it.

Awfully similar in design to the current Dandy logo though...

Not so pleased to see a contents page added to the comic. I know it's common practice now but a 32 page comic hardly needs it. I think I'd prefer an extra page of reprint to that, if they had to fill a page! Awkward page to fill though, now the new indicia takes up so much space. Maybe filling it up with pocket cartoons might work? (Anything's got to be better than a reader being faced with a contents page when he opens a comic. Hardly a grabber is it?)

Despite my animosity to reprints I'm pleased to see Ken Harrison's Hoot Squad back (reprinted as The Riot Squad). I wish the b*ggers paid reprint payments though!
