Preparing the Ultimate Summer Special No. 4 then? I bet the page with that cover mentions Doctor Who - the 1981 summer special appeared in it this week.
Sounds very deliberate as an anti-fraud measure. The original was also bigger, and different proportions - the inside pages have a strip across the bottom mainly consisting of clips of Tom Paterson's mini gags including the smelly sock.

Yes, but you can bet some swindler will have it up on ebay as an original by the weekend.
This year being the 50th anniversary of the first Summer Special (The Beano-Dandy Summer Special) wouldn't it be a good idea to reprint that? I can't be the only comics uk member who has never seen its contents.
I think it would be better to show the first Beano summer special rather than the Beano-Dandy one has it is filled with reprints rather than new stuff..I admit nice to see as well..
some are shown in the Beano coffee book..
That picture of the summer special in Doctor Who had 1981 on it. But all the pictures here show it without the year. I guess that means they added 1981 onto the title just for the reprint used in Doctor Who.
Two reasons. One, if the prop gets sold into public hands, it can't be fraudulently sold as an original copy. And two, the date was important to the plot of the episode, as it established what year the Doctor was currently in. I wonder why the date wasn't on the cover in the first place anyway? The annuals had added the dates in the late 60s.
The Beano Summer Specials from the 1980s didn't have the year they where released on the front covers just in the copyright bit printed inside the comic
