Perhaps they were thinking of the Dandy Book, but in that case the caller shouldn't have got the comic wrong. :headbash:
The public always get their characters and comics mixed up. Remember they threw them out years ago. Memories of trivial things get muddled, and as the comics were never that important to them they haven't retained the sort of memories about them that we have.

As for the annual, he probably has some vague memory of a full page Jocks & Geordies splash from a Dandy Book and thinks it was an annual cover.

The less young among us will recognise the front cover a mile off... the arches are from the Muppet Show!

Can't remember his full name or title but the Stirling fellow from the Beano was interviewed on Talksport at lunchtime. Only the Sun, Star and Metro had Beano 75 articles today. Among the tabloids that is. The caller who spoke about the Jocks and the Geordies was put on air as a comic collector but said he collected Magnet, Gem and Boy's Own and hadn't seen the Beano for about twenty years, I was hoping they would call me back and have me on air. Suppose I'll have to try again for the 100th birthday issue.

Phoenix wrote:Because you are thinking about how barcodes are read, Sid, you are missing my point, particularly with regard to whether shops do or do not have to know about the change of title. I'm looking at it from the point of view of a customer who can't find his BeanoMax. He's not going to say to an assistant, Hasn't barcode number***** come in this week yet? He's going to ask, Where have you stacked the BeanoMaxes this morning? And the assistant isn't going to say, Barcode number ***** did come in this morning, you must be looking in the wrong place.
I loved your scenario, Phoenix. To be honest, my tongue was firmly in cheek when I said my original mark. Of course the BeanoMAX reader would notice that his/her beloved comic has been replaced by Dennis the Menace and Gnasher Megazine. :)

What I was trying to say (badly) is that I think that by using the same barcode, DCT is hoping to use shops' existing orders for BeanoMAX to get the new Megazine on the shelves. Or it could be a simple mistake.

We'll know with issue 2!

This week's Beano is only £2.50 and has 44 "normal" pages plus a pull-out related to the gift (which we can probably entirely fairly call "free!")

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the cover with that price on it. I was expecting it to be £3. With the extra eight pages, for once, we can indeed call the covermount a free gift! Shame they used sellotape though, you can't remove it without ripping the cover - and those tall inserts usually get torn too, finding an undamaged copy won't be easy.

Not if you're careful.

Alternatively, use a scalpel (or Stanley knife) to cut off the free gift, leaving a bit of tape attached to the cover. Don't worry. It'll take about 30 years to go yellow and brittle and society will have broken down long before then so it'll be the least of people's worries.

Though already ordered from DCT, I'm away currently and hopefully will get it next week when I am Scotland.

Thought those weren't due out until tomorrow? I guess you got lucky and they were put out as soon as they arrived. :)

I'm not complaining Lew, it takes me back to when I bought comics as a kid in the 90s. Thanks for the advice though.

Went looking for them in WHSmith's in Manchester's Arndale Centre yesterday and they'd never heard of them - so I'll be trying again next week. Ah well.

Same here. Just blank looks.

They still have last year's Beano summer special bookazine which they always put on top of the weekly, thinking it's the same thing.

Out of the two guys looking for it (they DID try), one of them said "I thought they weren't doing the Dandy anymore?", so not a complete ignorance at least.
