The poll can't have any more options.........sorry......let me know of your favourites here...Corporal Clott...My Own Genie...(Bananaman..Cuddles and Dimples still feel they not Dandy yet:) )...Smasher...Peter's Pocket Grandpa...Shocker Jock..Hungry Horace...Freddy the fearless fly...Keyhole Kate...Jak...Jack Silver..Greedy Pigg...Harry and his hungry Hippo..Brain Duane...Blinky...Danny Long legs...Hyde and Shriek..hope thats jogged a few memories..
As a kid in the 80's I liked a lot.. Micky the mouth and Bertie Buncle and his chemical Uncle which I now know are the same artist...I think it was the extreem poses that I liked... like surprise!
My sister got The Dandy I was more of a Beano fan though I did read the Dandy which my sister had. The image which sticks with me is from a Dandy summer special 1981
The Great Dumpling chase aboad the good ship Dandy
loved the side plots and how it all linked together on the ship..
The Dandy with reprints of Desperate Dan...and strong fights and stealing food seemed even more naughty than the Beano..

I was always a fan of the adventure strips so Billy the Cat and General Jumbo were the two that I enjoyed the most. I so wanted to have a remote control army like Jumbo's.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

I used to love the adventure strips in the Dandy the ones like Brassneck and especially "Spunky and his spider" (I think there were a few in that style - great British stuff) My fav for childrens adventure strips were the Beezer and Topper though (Iron Eater, Jellymen, Whizzers from Oz) I can't remember the Umbrella men any chance of a scan Peter to jog the old memory (they sound interesting)

When I was doing Combat Colin I thought of it as a "comedy-action strip" so perhaps that would apply to those? I'd be interested to know what DC Thomson classed them as though.Peter Gray wrote:

Years ago I read the phrase "light adventure strips" somewhere, in relation to strips such as Billy the Cat or The Iron Fish, - and I suppose The Umbrella Men and Whizzers from Oz would fit that category too. Meaning that they weren't quite as "adult" (for want of a better term at this late hour) as the adventure strips in Victor for example. But there does need to be a different description for Brassneck, Winker Watson, Mo, Joe and Daddy-O etc.

When I was indexing them I put things like Danny Longlegs and Winker Watson in a category I called 'comic adventure strips' to contrast them with straight 'adventure' strips like Black Bob, Crackaway Jack etc.

'The PURPLE CLOUD' was fantastic.....it really grabbed my attention as a young 'DANDY'reader......this was a time when boxes of text, rather than word-balloons were often used, giving such strips a more 'serious' edge.....CHARLIE GRIGG done some fantastic stuff for 'DANDY' in this period, he often switched to a more 'illustrative' approach, and this was used to great effect in 'DANDY' annuals of the late '60s...........he was often given a two-page annual spread, in which he depicted spectacular, evocative illustations...........for me, one of the best 'DANDY' ingredients of this era.

Your a star Peter- Umbrella men look brilliant these strips should come back with a more modern spin on them (not an American spin though ie costumes etc)

My fave cartoon character in Dandy was `The Smasher` as he did things I would never dare do! Loved `Big Head and Thick Head` as well!
regarding the more `serious` strips! Who remembers `The Red Wrecker` and `The Stinging Swarm` ?
