^You should disable smilies, it'll fix the number 8.

Right, avoiding duplicates...

Bully Beef and Chips
Bananaman
Cuddles and Dimples
Peter's Pocket Grandpa
Keyhole Kate
Hungry Horace
Dinah Mo
Jak and Todd
Owen Goal
Blinky

Yeah, I know that Bananaman, Cuddles, Owen (as Cannonball Kid) and Blinky all have their origins elsewhere, but all of them lasted longer in the Dandy than in their original homes. That's not true for Beryl the Peril, who was in every issue of the Topper, so I didn't include her.

We already know that modern era characters Harry Hill, Astronuts, and Bad Grandad are in the list. I don't think anything that debuted in the Xtreme era will make the list - even the Art and History of the Dandy practically ignored those three years.

Andy Fanton said he would be doing a 2-pager of Bad Grandad, and there's rumours about Harry Hill.
so here's my top 10:
Julius Sneezer
The Smasher
Corporal Clott
Bad Grandad
Harry Hill
Monkey Bizness
Beryl The Peril
The Badd Lads
Robin Hood's Schoolboys
(note: some but not all of these were featured in the Dandy Annual 2013, but what if it was a outline for the last Dandy..? That's why I included some of the strips featured.)

The annual was planned months ago, before we knew the comic was closing. And don't forget that most of the previous annual was retro too.

Personally I can't see a scenario where there's a list of the 75 top Dandy characters and Desperate Dan doesn't get in at No 1. He's been in almost every issue since the start and is the Dandy's most famous character.

Big Head and Thick Head
Joe White and the Seven Dwarves
The Tricks of Screwy Driver
Brassneck
Winker Watson
Keyhole Kate
Desperate Dan
Spunky and His Spider? (have i got the title right?)
Black Bob
Greedy Pigg

I did this off the top of my head but if I sat and went through my dandy collecton it might change. Basically anything by Bill Holroyd is a must for me. Its like my top ten films would include about seven westerns. Top ten tv would be mostly 60s spy/secret agent stuff.

Even if it's just in at number 75, my favourite, of the "newish" characters, has got to be "My Own Genie".

Pure brilliance by Jamie Smart, this never fails to raise a chuckle, just wish there was a collected tome somewhere, or I could find that freebie booklet from a few years ago, me and my boys love the Nuttyness of it all!

Bananaman
Winker Watson
Spunky and his Spider
Desperate Dan
Robin Hood's Schooldays
Tumba and Rumba
Black Bob
Dirty Dick
Danny Longlegs
Bing-Bang Benny

I wouldn't have believed as a kid I would ever include Desperate Dan on a list of favourite Dandy characters, he was one of my least favourites! And I still don't like the way his stories were written or drawn then. Dan makes my list only on the strength of the best of the classic Dudley Watkins years and the recent Jamie Smart reinvention.

This isn't a list of my top ten favourite strips but what I think will make the top ten.

1. Desperate Dan (if he's your favourite or not there's no doubting he deserves it)
2. Korky the Cat (longest serving cover star)
3. Black Bob
4. Winker Watson (only strip to rival Dan for popularity apparently)
5. Bully Beef and Chips (Back cover stars for years)
6. Bananaman
7. Brassneck
8. Cuddles and Dimples (Big strip in The Dandy for a while)
9. The Jocks and the Geordies
10. Beryl the Peril

I might be wrong but we'll see........
