It was actually a farting contest. They weren't soiling the bed! (The "pooo" was a sound effect.)

Heh. Point taken. Yes, "gross-out humour" is in vogue at the moment, for good or bad. Understandably it's not to everyone's taste, and it's not my personal sense of humour either, even though I do similar strips for Toxic! But a crude fart gag is harmless compared to some of the xenophobic and racist strips that have plagued British comics of years gone by. Thank God we've long moved on from the character "Sparky"!

Sometimes gross gags work for me.....I like them fake.....so not a real fart..like a whoopee cusion etc...

Tom Paterson did a fake one with Sweeny......
It looked like Sweeny had lost his head with blood everywhere..it was ketchup......and the brown sauce in the nappy looked like....
Dinner with Sweeny....... :P :)

See the Whizzer and chips annual 1989

Also the thought bubble of the boy suggested it was a poo contest......if it was a fart joke the ending was funny.......the way they were straining it just didn't look right :P

I can't believe we're deconstructing a fart gag, but how else could one illustrate the correct smell in a pantomime (silent) strip without showing him thinking of a steaming turd? It's not to be taken literally. For example, when swearing is indicated in pictures it doesn't mean the character is actually saying "Skull, asterix, double exclamation mark!"
