Thanks for that information, Ray. It's many years since I bought anything from Silver Acre. I can't remember what it was but whatever it was I must have wanted it very badly because his prices at the time were as high in proportion as they seem to be now. I have a vague memory of going to his place once, which I think was somewhere near Queensferry, a smallish town roughly where you leave Wirral and turn onto the North Wales coast as if you are heading for Flint or Holywell.

What's lucky about it, Bri? I've got lots of free gifts in pristine condition. The reason they stay that way is because I'm very careful with them, and in most instances I didn't buy the comic that they were given away in. I'm sure Ray shows the same respect towards his comics and free gifts as I do towards mine. Why would we not?

I first bought from him decades ago, and yes his prices were high at the time, but as with anything, he had the comics I wanted at the time (which were Fawcett Whiz comics then) and no one else did. He was a fixture at the Liverpool and Birmingham comic marts for many years and even managed to stay the course during the huge American comic crash in the nineties and expanded into beanie babies and the like.

Always willing to pay a fair price for the stuff he wants too - he must have the best free gift collection in the country.

Curiously I went into an Antiques and Curios shop in Ormskirk this morning. It was crammed full of beanie babies and teddy bears of all colours, shapes and sizes. Nothing else! I asked the obvious question, only to be told that I would be able to see plenty of antiques on their stand in Rufford Village Hall tomorrow. To be fair he might have said 'Sunday' but it doesn't actually matter because I'm not going to go anyway as I believe that if a shop says it's a butcher's I would expect to be able to buy some meat there, not wool, books, cakes or greetings cards. In my opinion they don't deserve my custom.

Weird how beanie babies appear to be making a resurgence - I thought we’d seen the back of them, much like pogs.

You can't blame them for asking that much, Richard. They are trying to raise funds for their particular charity, but without having the specialised knowledge a collector such as you has. At least they will be able to reduce their asking price if it hasn't sold in the next couple of months, whereas if they price it at £20 and sell it immediately, they could well be upset if the buyer then tells them that he would have been prepared to pay up to £50 for a copy as it was the only one from the fifties that he hadn't got, or that in his experience it's as rare as hens' teeth.

it's not a complaint about the price - I'd like the charity shop to raise as much money as possible

I would have got another of my wanted comics, but for some reason, it came up as available to buy through the global shipping program, but when i clicked on it, it would not accept my payment.

Seems there might have been a glitch at eBay. Oh well. (it was a bundle of Busters).

I don't collect pocket size comics but they had 4 or 5 in a charity shop today at 50p each.
The only one that interested me was a Buster adventure library Robin Hood the rest were war comics.I picked it out and was going to select another to go with it when I noticed about 3/4 inch torn off at the bottom right hand corner of the cover and that was enough to make me change my mind.

The other week in a charity shop I saw a Dandy annual with the spine missing not dated on the front for £3.
When I got home I checked on Comics UK to find the date and it was 1957, I didn't buy it but even in the damaged state I think it would have been good value.

Did buy three comics today at a pound each from the charity shop Panini Fantastic Four adventures 2005 (not really a fan but the second half of the hundred page comic is devoted to older reprints).
Titans Superman Kal 1995
Clive Barkers Night Breed 1992

I was told that 30th century comics have some Double Double comics in stock some priced at £50 a copy. I've always had a soft spot for them and wonder why they go for such high prices? Do same numbered issues have different contents?
