The DFC on sale at Tesco NEXT WEEK - 1 week only

Post by Lew Stringer »

Six months after its launch as a subscription-only weekly comic, The DFC will be available to buy off the shelf next week from retail giant Tesco. This is a special promotion and is for one week only, from 26th November to 2nd December at a reduced cover price of £1.99. Tesco is the only place you'll be able to buy it, outside of a subscription.

The promotional edition is the full 36 page format, but at present I'm not sure whether this will be an additional issue to the weekly or that week's actual issue (No.27). Hopefully full resumés of the stories will be included to bring new readers up to speed on the serials.

This is a natural (and no doubt expensive) move for The DFC to take, so it'll be interesting to see how it fares for its first venture in public as it were. Critics of the subscription-only method now have no excuse not to sample a copy, and the special £1.99 cover price gives it a fair advantage over many other comics / magazines.

Hi chaps, just to clarify what Lew said above (cheers Lew!), it will be issue 26 - so, the one that subscribers will get this Friday. The Tesco version will have a slightly different cover to the subscriber edition, but the same interiors.

This is surely good news,
Good news when everyone heard a new comic was coming out, that most thought would never happen, and now going on sale in Tesco, OK only for 1 week but it's a start so who knows.
I will defo be seeking it out, I only hope my nearest Tesco stocks it.

Distribution seems to be limited. My local Tesco didn't have it.

To tell you the truth with my luck finding new comics in my area I didn't expect to find it in my nearest large Tesco, but there it was sitting in the front in it's own little box.

I managed to grab a copy. The Tescos in Leytonstone has a rack of them, bottom row, front and centre of the kids' comics section.

I have a feeling the cover coudl've been a bit stronger. Even with the high profile location it didn't really stand out to me.

So what do you guys who've picked it up at Tesco's for the first time think of the DFC?

I've been a subscriber since issue one for my sons (10 and 8) and they can't wait for each issue to come through on a Friday / Saturday... they absolutely LOVE it and, to be totally honest, we DO fight over opening the envelope !!

It has a great mix of humour and adventure strips and, you know, continuous adventure strips work a lot better in a weekly comic - you get more of a sense of continuity imho).

I love the way they are trying to stick to the 'old' traditions - special issue for Halloween (ok, that would have been a 'fireworks' issue in days gone by I guess - health and safety blahblah), and they promise a BUMPER (68-page) Christmas issue with lots of snow-covered titles and festive stories.

I buy them The Beano and Dandy each and the DFC between them (they were more than happy to drop Doctor Who Adventures for DFC) .. and their favourite is DFC, followed by The Beano, then the Dandy.

Guess what they both say that puts The Dandy last .... ? "Not enough comic strips in the comic"....

I'm really not sure their 'focus group' got it right with the 'Xtreme' launch ... my two would be over the moon if it was de-Xtremed and was more similar to The Beano....

maybe it's just my kids who are odd !!

Well, the Tesco week is over now - I finally managed to pick up a few copies in my local Big Tesco (tm) last night - and I thought I should point out a little note on the back cover, for those of you who haven't seen it. If you go to this url:

http://www.thedfc.co.uk/tesco

You can pick up a four-issue subscription for only £9.99. Not only is that a nice stocking-filler idea for people who've got young 'uns amongst their friends and family, but it's a great way for those of you who've been getting all misty-eyed at Lew's recent blog postings about Christmas Comics to get the DFC's double-length Christmas Special - issue 30, FYI - to add to your collections (but you'll have to be quick, this week is probably the last week you'll get that issue as one of the four). Sweet!

Anyway, shameless advertising over and out ^_^

Thanks Laura. I wasn't going to pay another £30 sub but a tenner to include the Christmas issue sounds good so I've subscribed to that. (Although I imagine the bumper double Xmas issue will count as two, which is fair enough.) My copy of issue 26 didn't arrive so they're sending me another "in 5 to 12 days", - just in time to get lost in the Christmas post. ;-)

Good on ya Lew! I have some spares of 26 now if yours does vanish into the postal ether, so let me know. And here's a bit of news you'll like - I checked with them, and the Christmas issue doesn't count as two of the four, just one. So in actual fact a person taking out the four-issue subscription this week will get five issues' worth of content. Wahey! How could anyone refuse??

Unfortunately I've had no subscription confirmation, no back issue, and no new issue, so I'm rapidly losing patience with the organization of The DFC. A pity, considering the high quality of its content but comics are often let down by management and behind the scenes cock ups.

D'ohh. Well, I suppose they did say it would be 5-12 days for the replacement 26... and if you took out a new subscription earlier this week, I'm guessing the first one of your new batch will be 29 or 30, rather than this week's (because although your subscription is a renewal, a few weeks did elapse between this new one starting and the old one finishing - maybe?) Although it would be nice if you'd had a message confirming that...

But I can understand your annoyance, Lew. You actively want to support the DFC and you're losing patience - a casually curious parent who got messed around setting up a new subscription would drop it like a hot potato. And unfortunately, as the popular saying goes, a happy customer tells one of their friends, an unhappy customer tells ten. Sigh.

I'm sure these procedural creases will be smoothed out over time, though. So, um, don't let all this put off any of you out there who are thinking of signing up TOO much...
