Commando's 50th Birthday.

Pocket-sized war 'comic' that has been around since 1961 and is still going strong.

Commando's 50th Birthday.

Post by stevezodiac »

I have not renewed my Commando sub as I just don't have room to store all the reprint issues. I now just buy the two new issues from my local Smiths, although annoyingly they have inserted those white plastic security tags inside the spine as people have been stealing them. Anyway the latest issues have this advert for the 50th Birthday celebrations.

Have you tried selling the reprint issues on eBay? There might be some interest from people who don't have the originals and who live in areas where Commando isn't distributed.

Sounds like they're counting down from 12 to 1 with those reprints. So Commando #1 would be reprinted this time next year. Steve, I'm going to guess you don't already have that issue, so perhaps you were a tad hasty cancelling that sub. And does the security tag damage them at all? If yes, that's another reason to subscribe. Lew has a good point, if any are duplicates, you can always sell them on.

Good guess James. That's exactly what's happening. It's a good way to celebrate the 50th and a welcome sight to see reprints older than the 1980's stuff they've been running. (I usually ignore the reprints but I'll buy these 1961 editions.)

Those covers and titles are great. They have that grittiness that "men's fiction" had back in 1961. Slightly edgier than today's stuff.

For a while now the reprints have been from around 1992-3 :P I think i remember Commando CO saying that the average age of readers is 15. So i suppose they reprint stories from about 17-19 years ago that will be "new" to a 15 year old reader. Even if they started reading it as a baby, presumably!

Those security tags are stuck to the spine border and impossible to remove. I have hundreds of the reprint issues of Commando and have already thought of selling them in batches on ebay. As long as my local Smiths stocks Commando i can get the new issues and the vintage reprints from there. As I have said before i would carry on with my sub if I could just have the new issues. As it happens my latest sub issues came yesterday including the two I had already got from Smiths a week earlier - unusual for the shop to beat the subscriptions isn't it?

Definitely. I get the feeling your subscription copies got delayed by the weather and should've arrived last week.

Just saw the first batch in local Smiths with reprinted issue 12. Interestingly they have placed the credits box on the inside cover so as not to spoil the original appearance of the splash page.

Picked up the reprinted first issue of Commando today from WH Smiths - rush out and get your copy, pilgrims. It actually has the word Twitter in it as mentioned on the inside cover blurb. Also bought the two new issues.
