1970s Viking Comic?

Post by The Hornet »

Hi all

I noticed this on ebay:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VIKING-COMIC-RED- ... 2283wt_932

Does anybody know anything about this comic? As the gift is the same as the gift given away in No.1 of IPC's Action comic in 1976 I wonder if this was a comic that IPC was going to publish a few years earlier, but was dropped?

Cheers

Probably had a trial run but never got released nationally. Valiant was 5p in 1974, so I reckon it's from then, since the microfiche of the Viking masthead says 5p on it.

Very interesting! I think you're right, as Double Dynamite was a strip in Action. This must have either been the working title for the comic or, as you suggest, an idea they dropped. (Probably for the best. Viking sounds a bit outdated for a 1970s comic. Action was more to the point. Not that it did it any good sadly.)

So many dummy issues and ideas for comics that we'll never know about...

A comic called Viking never existed, or we'd have heard about it before now. This must have just been an aborted idea, along with Spitfire, Spooky, Potty and all the rest.

I see that this fiche copy is doing the rounds again - and now with added free gift (Hmm...)

I once owned it (or another copy) and it's a nice little curiosity but I think it's somewhat over marketed here. As mentioned above this might have been an aborted October 1974 launch but the prototype name of Action was Action '76, so if you're thinking of buying it then I hope I've added some relevant information.

I wonder if Football Crazy was a prototype for Leave It To Lefty?

And that is so overpriced, it is a bad joke. £495 for that? Leave it out!
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

Well The Boy Who Went to War, listed in the contents, ran in Valiant from its 26th April 1975 issue.
