Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
...Note that's Geoff Jones the British comic artist - not the American Jeff Jones who recently died.
While I'd certainly heard of him I have to confess that I knew very little about the extent of his involvement in UK comics - at least not until I picked up this engaging memoir at a local boot sale for just 50p this morning:
In fact I was quite amazed I'd never come across it before, even though it was published as recently as 2007 (a sure sign of how much we miss Dez Skinn's old Comics International! ), and while I'd have preferred far more detail about his later work as a cartoonist the story of his early life on a farm in the Severn Valley is quite fascinating in itself.
As a matter of interest I wonder if anybody can identify even a fraction of the work he produced for this impressive lineup of publications over the years?

That cover reminds me of books by Mitsumasa Anno.http://looky.wordpress.com/2008/10/06/annos-journey/
But no, I've never heard of Geoff Jones, very intrigued to hear more.

Is it weird to have no interest in keeping or collecting free gifts?

Does he say in the book what he drew for, say, Buster, Valiant, Look-In, and/or Lion?

Alternate listing is A Life Drawing at Bank House Books. Might buy a copy myself and see if I recognise the style.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
Re: Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
Unfortunately the book doesn't go into much detail about the strips he drew, but here are some examples of his work:

(Hope everyone is having a good Benedict Arnold Day btw! )

Hmm - a Harry's Haunted House strip with a Hire a Horror title panel, and the character addressed as 'Landlord' not even remotely resembling the Landlord character in Harry's 70s strip. I don't recall that appearing in the weekly. Peculiar.

Re: Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
Looks like he wasn't very comfortable with the "bigfoot" style strips. (That's a word I picked up from Alter Ego interviews where American artists differentiated between the serious strips eg Steve Canyon and the funnies like Peanuts).
Re: Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
That Doctor Who strip must be from 1980, assuming the date "Eighties" is correct, as Romana left the show in January 1981.

I recognise Sampan Sammy from the 70's Victor. I can see it but I am stuffed if I can name the series. I think Geoff also did a few football strips as well.

1979 actually. It appeared in issue 3 of Doctor Who Weekly, among others.Digifiend wrote:That Doctor Who strip must be from 1980, assuming the date "Eighties" is correct, as Romana left the show in January 1981.
I interviewed Geoff a little while back. i must transcribe for use, some day.
Re: Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
Then it's not even Eighties, so it's a mistake in the book.

Re: Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
Just needed to find this for my next blog post and it is to say that 763 is towards the end of the Sammy Sampan run. In fact that may be the finale of the story. I am currently working my way through 754 and we are in the middle of the Sammy story.Digifiend wrote:http://superherostore.150m.com/catalog.txt

Re: Whoever heard of Geoff Jones?
At long last, I have eventually picked up this little beauty and it is a wonderful book. I recommend it to all of you not as a biography of his work, but as a wonderful book about a farming life that no longer exists.
