My ideal Dandy

Post by dishes »

This is a complete fantasy based on my own biases and selective reading. I invite others to do the same. My ideal Dandy as a boy would have been very different- The Jocks and the Geordies were my favourite strip back then. But tastes change.

All stories are coloured as the customarily were, whether full colour, spot colour, or black and white.
.
Front cover- Korky the Cat (Crichton)
Page 2-4 Bananaman (three page adventure) (Geering)
Page 5 Desperate Dan (Watkins- 50's era)
6-7 Robin Hood's Schooldays (Spencer)
8 The Smasher (Morren)
9-10 Black Bob (Prout)
11-Dinah Mite (Spencer)
12-13 Spunky the Spider (Holroyd)
14 Ali Ha-Ha (Reid)
15 Dirty Dick (Roberts)
16-17 (centre spread) Corporal Clott (Law)
18-19 Puss 'n' Boots (Geering) (Sparky era, if that's not cheating)
20 Bing-bang Benny (Reid)/letters column
21 Tumba and Rumba (Spencer)
22-23 Danny Longlegs (Watkins)- perhaps alternated with other adventure stories.
24-25 Winker Watson (Roberts)
26 The Snobbs and the Slobbs (Geering)
27 Greedy Pigg (Martin)
28-29 Cuddles and Dimples (Appleby)- since the centre spread had to go to Clott, they must make do with one of those great early strips where the final panel takes up the whole second page.
30-31 Pre-skool Prime Minister (Smart)
32 (back cover) Bully Beef and Chips (Hughes)

Ooh, I like threads like these!

this is how my ideal Dandy would be:

- Front Cover- rotates characters and artists each issue.
- Page 2- Contents, listing not only strips but artists and writers a la the current Beano.
- Page 3- Corporal Clott (Nigel Auchterlounie)
- Page 4-5- Pre-Skool Prime Minister (Jamie Smart)
- Page 6- Mr. Meecher (Wilbur Dawbarn)
- Page 7- Mini Strips 1 (definitely with something by Dean Rankine in there)
- Page 8-9- Brain Duane (Tom Paterson)
- Page 10-11- Rocky's Horror Show (Wilbur Dawbarn)
- Page 12- Molly (David Mostyn)
- Page 13- A new strip (not sure which artist. Maybe get Alan Ryan in there?)
- Page 14-15- Bananaman (Wayne Thompson, not ghosting Geering. Written out-of-house)
- Page 16- My Dad's A Doofus (Jamie Smart)
- Page 17- Mini Strips 2
- Page 18-19 (centrespread)- The Bogies (Nigel Auchterlounie)
- Page 20- Another new strip
- Page 21- Mailbag
- Page 22- Nuke Noodle (Alexander Matthews)
- Page 23- Madvert (various)
- Page 24-25- My Own Genie (Jamie Smart)
- Page 26- Smasher (Brian Walker, or someone using his design for the character)
- Page 27- Mini Strips 3
- Page 28-29- Send For Kelly (Nigel Auchterlounie)
- Page 30- Whacko! (Alexander Matthews)
- Page 31- Postman Prat (Lew Stringer)
- Page 32- Beryl the Peril (Steve Bright)
- Page 33- Kid Cops (Lew Stringer)
- Page 34- George Vs. Dragon (Andy Fanton)
- Page 35- Next Week
- Page 36- Desperate Dan (Jamie Smart)

I'd also use the nice paper stock the comic used during 2010-2011.

Mine would be as follows:

P2 Hungry Horace (Morley)
P3 Mini Strips
P4 Claude Hopper
P5 Keyhole Kate (Morley)
P6 George and the Dragon
P7 -P8 Winker Watson (Roberts)
P9 Dirty Dick (Roberts)
P10 Corporal Clott (Law)
P11 - P12 Desperate Dan (Watkins)
P13 Greedy Pigg
P14-15 Maybe a guest appearance from the Beano?
P16 Barney Boko
P17 - 18 Spunky and his Spider
P19 - 20 Brassneck
P21 Something by Jamie Smart
P22 Smasher (Morren - Sorry Lew)
P23 Send for Kelly
P24 Your Story
P25 Weekly strip based on a funny event or news story that week.
P26 Charlie Chutney (Morley)
P27 -Back Cover - Story featuring Dan, Korky, Winker, and Smasher.

The back cover story would also include the page before it (P27) so the back cover would be P28

Wot, no Paddy Brennan Island of Monsters or John Geering Monkey Bizness?

Your 27 page Dandy would be a bit of a marvel, Dunder Ed, with its back page an odd number!

Thanks for the replies!
Though pedantically, Dunder Ed, how can 27 be the back cover?
It's quite a pleasingly surreal idea though.
EDIT- Raven beat me to it.

I personally don't tend to like the mini-strips so much as the full page strips in the Dandy but I suppose that depends on how strong the gag is.
Have since thought of other stuff I should have included, though I don't know what I'd leave out to make room for it!

Just to see a Dandy in print.

My idea Dandy would be something like the last issue but that is too much of an ask. So a nice one would be as follows. All strips would be drawn by the original artists unless specified:

Front Page: Would feature a strip from the comic done in rotation as they appear in the comic. The strip would then continue on that strip's home page(s).
Page 2: Korky the Cat (Grigg)
Page 3: Desperate Dan
Pages 4-5: Winker Watson
Pages 6-7: Black Bob
Page 8: Greedy Pigg
Page 9: Bad Grandpa
Centre Pages 10-11: Jack Silver
Pages 12-13: Cuddles and Dimples (Parkinson)
Pages 14-16: A classic reprint story from the DCT archives (e.g. King Cobra)
Pages 17-18: Brassneck
Page 19: The Dandy Club (advertising the up and coming annual)
Back Page: Bully Beef and Chips

Only 20 pages? The page count hasn't been that low since... 1988?

Wasn't being too greedy. ;)

PS I didn't include Bananaman since he is now in The Beano.
