Re: Spot the actors

I recall a short-lived 1980s comic that clearly used A-Ha's singer Morten Harket for its lead character in an action orientated strip. The strip 'The Laughing Cats' (Diana, 1967) clearly used David McCallum as reference for its male lead. I believe the artist was Gonzalez, who had drawn 'The Man fr...

As for the Hulk, there are similar mysteries about the colour of Korky's nose, Rupert's fur, and Magnus Robot Fighter's boots.
Firstly, thanks for the scan of #1001. Secondly, isn't the mystery about Little Plum's nose, and not Korky's?

Presumably it's red because Korky lives in Glasgow (where P.B.s were coloured red up to the end of the sixties) (it sez here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_box ).

Re: Police Boxes

The only one I remember well was on the road leading from Fort Hill to Broughty Ferry; it had an air-raid siren on top (the icing on the cake!). It was removed in the Seventies. Dreamticket, there's a box on the cover of Dandy No. 1001, Jan 28th 1961. It's been coloured red like a GPO phone box, an...

Re: First female-led strip in a boys's comic

Circe, the evil sorceress from Greek mythology (drawn here by Ron Embleton) made a pretty impressive villainess in the classic Boys' World strip 'Wrath of the Gods'! http://i40.tinypic.com/301fq7m.jpg Beyond that, however, I think the editors of comics like Lion , Tiger and Valiant were aiming at a...

Police Boxes

I'm starting this topic in honour of last night's Doctor Who, which got a big thumbs-up from me (nice to see them using footage of William Hartnell et al, and can't wait to see what use they make of John Hurt in the next series). Anyhoo, just how common a sight were police boxes on Britain's streets...

Re: Missing image in gallery

With specific reference to the cover galleries, is it the aim of the site to index all British comics ever released, or just a couple of examples of each. If the latter, then what is the criteria for inclusion? First and last? Noteworthy covers?

Three different artists on one page. Can anyone help identify them?

Did you mean Roger Moore? I can see the resemblance...

Here's John Lawrie:

Re: First female-led strip in a boys's comic

Yeah, StarLord had Ardeni Lakam of Mind Wars. She had a male twin but was the lead and more powerful. Planet of the Damned also had a female villain. http://imageshack.us/a/img818/9950/starlord11.jpg Was Ardeni hero or villain? My memory was as a villain who redemes herself in the end, but I might ...

Re: First female-led strip in a boys's comic

I started this in the 2000AD forum but it's got more general. I'm wondering when the first female protagonist appeared in a boys' comic. For the purposes of this discussion I am assuming that the likes of Beano and Dandy are unisex: the rule of thumb being that it would be entirely acceptable for a...

Re: Down the Tubes (British comics news site) closes

A couple of months ago I submitted the form to join their blog. Three or four weeks down the line it was still not approved (not reviewed??) so I cancelled my application. They must be very busy there. I joined about the same time and was approved almost immdeiately. You've probably missed the appr...

Re: First female-led strip in 2000AD?

I was chatting with a friend about Ebony in The Crunch and it got me wondering whether she was the first female protagonist in a comic aimed at boys. I know there's a long history of female protagonists in 2000AD, but I really have no idea how far back it goes. The earliest I can think of were the ...

Re: Art spotters this way!

I am VERY sure when I see Terry Patrick. It is almost as if he saw Ron Smith's stuff and decided to send it up when he drew for comedic effect. I don't suppose you know if he also drew The Only Boat From Fire Island, also in Hotspur at about the same time as Thief Taker? It could also be by Keith S...
