This one ROKS!

I don?t know if any of you have heard, but John Freeman?s devised this scheme to produce comics on mobile phones. It?s called ROK comics. Well, it seems he?s accepted my old creation Billy Bang on the ROK site. God knows why. On reflection, the concept of a kid who literally explodes with anger was ...

Self-Promotion...

Yes, I realise this is a rather shameless attempt at self-promotion but I?ve just created a blog. Anyone interested can view this monstrosity at... http://ukworstschool.blogspot.com/ Back in the 80?s I created a series set in a public school for, I think it was the Victor . It was a send up of Tom B...

Tales from the Asylum...

Just finished reading Titan?s ?Arkham Asylum,? written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Dave McKean. Two of our own producing some stunning artwork and a tight story line. According to the Guardian this was, ?...one of the best Batman comic strips ever.? I agree. There was a time when the Americans ha...

Good comics for adverts - late 1950s?

Just a thought. Kim wouldn?t by any chance be sponsored by Kellogs would he? It just seems odd that someone should be interested in cereals. Personally, I never touched them. Not even the ones that went ?snap, crackle and pop!? :)

Good comics for adverts - late 1950s?

It may have been, but I can?t honestly recall any. Perhaps Scott?s Porridge Oats may have made an appearance, due to its miraculous ability to neutralize the effects of Arctic winters. But I feel the readers expected such commodities best left to their mothers. I did, at least. Cereals in the Eagle?...

Good comics for adverts - late 1950s?

I must confess to getting my parents to buy me a pair of ?Dan Dare? pyjamas I saw advertised in the Eagle. I was then photographed wearing them in the back garden. An image that still makes me blush. The Eagle was a veritable gold mine for adverts. If I recall correctly, I think it was also possible...

Comix Zone

Looking through an old copy of ?Retro Gamer? I came across an article about a Mega Drive game called ?Comix Zone.? It was written by Sega and involved the lead character called Sketch Turner who became trapped in his own comic. Needless to say, this gave me nightmares. I could just imagine myself en...

I seem to recall coming across an old Lord Snooty story in which Dudley Watkins drew himself, (Snooty and his pals wanted Dudley to teach them how to draw.) I just wonder how many other artists have appeared in their own stories. Given the massive egos these people have, (just look at the famous pai...

Randi v Jimmy Watson...

Okay, here?s a bit of fun. Let?s see how imaginative you lot can be. Remember ?Jimmy and his Magic Patch?? Correct me if I?m wrong, but I think it was drawn by the great Dudley Watkins. Anyway, imagine you?re a scientist and you?ve been hired by that great sceptic, James Randi, to prove it?s a fraud...

Are British Comics Dead?

Jaded? Far from it! After almost 30 years in the business I still love writing and can?t see myself doing anything else. Correction ? it?s not love, it?s an obsession. And comics is only one of the mediums I work in. My point is simple: the rest of that article could have been a literary masterpiece...

Are British Comics Dead?

I?d put myself into that category. For example, when doing a Commando story depicting Germans, I?d have the Hun saying things like, ? Himmel! What was that?? or ? Teufel! It?s the Englanders.? It never occurred to me that the reader would recognise the Germans by their uniforms. So why did I use a m...

Are British Comics Dead?

Sorry about that. It just didn?t sound right. ?Who says British Comics are dead? and ?True, a lot of the material...? just sounded contradictory to me. But then I?m motivated by the Lure of the Pedant, (lest the Old Bill are monitoring this, the term refers to someone who can?t see the wood for the ...

Are British Comics Dead?

There?s an item in ?Down the Tubes? that reads... ?Who says British comics are dead? Certainly not the staff of Titan Magazines and Panini UK, who are filling the newsagents shelves with their publications. True, a lot of the material is reprinted from US comics, but the strips are lovingly repackag...

I see no problem with Marvo?s cigars. Instead of tobacco, they could be made of a herbal mixture. Rolled on the thighs of maidens working for Holland & Barrett, the mixture could contain hemp and dried banana skins.

A Penny For Them...

Looking through a second-hand bookshop, I found a ?The Best of Chums? book. It celebrates the Boy?s Paper "Chums" that ran from 1892 until 1941. Goebbles, who never let an opportunity pass, probably chalked this up as another victory for the Nazis. ?Mein Fuhrer! I haff more good news! Der Editor of ...
