Re: Old Daily Express strip
Hi Ginger Yes, I did Google Dickens, and tEMPS, and Spare Ribs, but the information is scanty. I also raised a question on Dickens' web-site, but I was the first person to do so in abut five months so I'm not sure when or even if I'll get anything back. I suspect that I'm going to have to set myself ...

Re: Old Daily Express strip
Entirely possible. No, Dickens used his space wisely in 'Spare Ribs', taking advantage of Roberts' ability to design a stylish panel without using up all the room. And he was more than capable of brevity to make his point: one strip had just two panels, with the set-up being the leading pair leaving...

Re: Old Daily Express strip
As a PS: a Google search identifies the late Don Roberts as the artist on 'Spare Ribs', which of course he was, and wonderful in the process. Armed with these two additional pieces on information, can anyone shed additionsl light on the strip? Might there be some form of even partial collection of c...

Re: Old Daily Express strip
Hi Ginger, thanks for responding. Since my original post, a memory door has opened and clued me back in on the strip being entitled 'Spare Ribs', though no other details have floated back. As for Dickens' artwork, it's something on whch I think we'll have to politely differ. Living in Manchester, I ...

Old Daily Express strip
Good afternoon, everybody. I wonder if anyone can assist me with information about a relatively short-lived Daily Express strip cartoon in the mid/late Seventies. I used to know the essential details about this but unfortunately I've suffered from some unfortunate ageing and my memory ain't what it ...

Re: Trying to identify a strip
Thank you for discussing the matter, and for the additional information you've given. I've no doubt that if I read the series again now, I'd come to the same conclusion, and please don't think that I've been arguing with you over it, merely trying to relay impressions and vague memories almost a hal...

Re: Trying to identify a strip
That's a very valid point, and all I can say in response is that, as a mid 9 year old reading the story, I smply don't recall getting any sense that we were suppose to disapprove of the 'hero's actions. Not having read the story since 1965, I'm in no position to be authoritative, but my recollection...

Re: Trying to identify a strip
Phoenix
Once again, many thanks. Strange to see that the two stories all but overlapped each other.
I wonder if the text version was a little less unsubtle at its final Crime Does Not Pay moral?

Re: Trying to identify a strip
Phoenix No, Jimmy the Dodger certainly isn't the story I was thinking of, and I don't recollect reading the one you describe. I can't really give any more detailed description of the one I'm trying to identify - the serial was one long set-up for those final two, sympathy-reversing panels which, aft...

Re: Trying to identify a strip
Phil Thanks for the links, which are indeed interesting. I echo Kashgar's comments about such things not being done at the time. Phoenix Can I prevail upon you one more time? There was another Victor story with a similiarly surprisingly reversal ending that I'm 99% certain I've identified as "Jimmy ...

Agreed, but I never read Look & Learn (only the Ranger insert, in our School Library, with pre Bell & Redfern translations od Asterix, or should we say, Beric, Doric and Son of Boadicea?

Re: Trying to identify a strip
I'm 95% convinced it was Victor or Hornet, but I have been known to be wrong about things I was 100% convinced upon before. I've checked the link with a search for Sohrab, unsuccessfully. That's one of the problems. I have absolutely no recollection of the story outside its unduly-impressing ending....

Re: Trying to identify a strip
Thanks Digifiend.
I should have said I've already tried that sight with no joy on a search for "Sohrab", nor could Adrian remember it himself, when he graciously responded to my e-mail.

Trying to identify a strip
Hello all I'm trying to identify a strip from the Sixties which,I am convinced, appeared in either the Victor or the Hornet . I can't remember the title of the series, but it was based, however loosely, on Matthew Arnold's epic poem, "Sohrab and Rustum". The series followed Sohrab on his quest to fi...
