Re: Politics in kids comics

I can remember John Major being in the first Bash St Kids special, from 1994. Also, back in the day, "celebrities" were usually politicians, royals and military commanders. Old story papers from the early 20th century often had illustrations of various kings, queens and kaisers (he's always the easy...

Re: Amalgamated Press/IPC/Fleetway Confusion

Back in the day, publishers would simply be named after the manager, or simply be "published by the proprietors," and the address given. I think "Amalgamated Press" was originally known as Harmsworth Publishing, after the founder, Alfred Harmsworth (who also founded the Daily Mirror and Daily Mail.....

Re: Scanlations

People who "don't like manga" (having probably seen the popular shonen battle series, full of people "powering up" to take on ever-greater enemies in ludicrously overdramatic scenes) ought to check out Monster, a series which is being currently reprinted in "perfect editions", with dark red covers. ...

Re: Ghost Adventures/Most Haunted

I once found some people on Youtube who did their own "Most Haunted" style investigations. There was a few inexplicable things in those shows, like (railway station platform) lights switching off "on command". Still, they're entertainment. I did see a very over-played US show that was obviously fake...

Re: Eagle - Odd Religious advert in Picture Post 1952

The process that created Eagle was remarkably similar to the process that created the Boys' Own Paper about 80 years previously, as was the thinking behind the design - the people with the artistic vision knew that children wouldn't read anything "preachy", but might be convinced if the Christian mo...

Re: Roy Race

The non-Roy stories do seem to be largely overlooked, when people talk about his own comic, though some of them ran for years and years. At least a few were even set in the same universe - I've seen one strip where he phones up "The Hard Man", offering to buy his star striker. But, at a whole two mi...

Re: BOUND COPIES

Why would you want to seperate them? I suppose individual ones can be sold for more seperately, but do you want to sell them? Binding a collection keeps it together, and better-preserved for the future. As some people have said, you can get publisher's own file volumes, amateur bound efforts (or, on...

Re: Help - 1920s 'The Popular' from Amalgamated Press

I think the penny-halfpenny re-launch was 1919, rather than 1920. I have the first few issues of that re-launch "bound", but in very bad condition! I don't know about the later issues, but the ones I have have three short stories, featuring popular AP characters (Billy Bunter, Sexton Blake etc). I t...

Re: HELP - 1910s The Empire Library

I should think sales figures were a lot higher back then - no videogames, TV or even radio, for one thing! Plus comics were 'cheaper', even with purchasing power, inflation and wages taken into account. Though back then the poor were really poor! Oh, and Amalgamated Press shipped their publications ...

Re: Realistically drawn comics

One of the research groups at my work recently moved, leaving a building mostly empty - said building with lots of lovely desks - finally! I can draw on my breaks! (and, with no internet, actually get something done). Anyway, the building has started to fill up with new people. One guy saw my "reali...

Re: Asterix Latest Book

There was an Iznogoud cartoon in the 90's (though it may have been repeats, and actually made earlier). I think I remember him saying "I want to be king" instead of "I want to be caliph", though. In France, some journalist invented an "Iznogoud Award", for somebody who tries to make a power grab and...

Re: What do comic retailers offer in the 21st. century?

Well my main (only!) comic shop is Forbidden Planet, and that has plenty of Japanese stuff, as well as reprinted British material from Titan and Rebellion. No Phoenix or Commando, though. And I won't be holding my breath for the "Jesus, it's twenty quid!" new SBL either.

Re: Misty Coming Back

Sounds like some books collecting complete serials, it's about time something other than wars got a look-in, I suppose! That "herald a return for the ongoing comic" is typical "the Dandy isn't 30p any more??" wishful thinking. No amount of Charley's War books is going to revive Battle in the current...

Re: Comics with the most eye-catching name or logo

The blandest of all has to be the generic "Girl", particularly in its second incarnation, which simply used photographs for cover art, and aspired to an older age group's magazine style. If you're talking Generic... :P Ooh, careful! a whole plot in a s...
