Re: Don't call me Fatty, the name's Freddy!
I can't not notice the word "blam" used as a slangy adjective in the ad for those Boomics. It's all over the relatively recent Dennis cartoon, too; is it exclusively Beano slang, or something kids in the UK actually say? (I'm leaning toward the former, and guessing it's the editors trying too hard t...

It's Carl Barks' "Krankenstein Gyro," and it's definitely been in Australia!suebutcher wrote:I'm still trying to find the chicken-hatches-a-doorknob Gearloose story in the Australian comics, but I'm not sure of the strip's title.

Re: Mighty Moth and Barney Bear
Yes, Barney Bear was an old MGM animated character from the 1940s. I remember some of the cartoons being shown on tv too in the 1970s, hence their inclusion in TV Comic. As a longtime part of the Tom and Jerry package, they were run on American TV until only about ten years ago. Occasional Barney c...

They're fantastic. Brilliant artwork, and lots of features and extra strips at the back. I'm sure you'll love them. Thanks very much—on behalf of Fantagraphics and myself! (Series editor here...) Let it be said, right here in ComicsUK (where someone will actually appreciate it!)—beyond Gottfredson,...

More cheerful kids with sardonic humour and bone-breaking strength are what we need. I'm very pleased to hear that one of my favorites is back!

Re: Digital Dandy
The changes will be more apparent once they do something about beano.com, which ceased updating at the end of October. It mystifies me that more people aren't talking about this—if they were going to stop updating the site, why not at least drop the "new issue out now" feature, and replace it with ...

Count me in for the complete Rasher.
And Bash Street, year by year.
And Baby-Face Finlayson.
And Three Bears. I've always wanted comprehensive collections of these, and always figured they were impossible pipe dreams.

As a Yank with no easy Beano access, I can't see the new Rashers—but I know they're good from what everyone is saying. So let me join the choir... i loved Rasher's page in the 1980s and would love to have more full-page Rashers, on principle alone. Oinkyes! Oinkhey! Oinkoops!

Re: Digital Dandy
I hate to say this, but Digital Dandy 0—which I sampled online—was extremely slow and glitchy, sort of like many interactive webtoons ten years ago or more. The results simply need to get more professional.. it breaks my heart to say this.

Re: Baby Face is back
I do recollect something "special" about Goo-Goo's dialogue, but I can't recall what it was—nor, frustratingly, can I find any appearances by him in the back issues I have accessible (a random mix from 1982 to the present...) He may have only said "goo-goo" and variations thereof, but that seems too...

Re: "The Legend of Lord Snooty" book
The Dandy's Our Gang features two black boys, "Billy Thomas" and "Buckwheat Thomas." Someone (Watkins?) didn't do his research, as Billie/Buckwheat Thomas in the American films is actually just one kid! ISPYSHHHGUY: Mickey Rooney was never part of Our Gang, so I'm not sure which of the two hatted ki...

Re: Mickey mouse weekly covers request..1930's
There were really two links in my message—but for clarity's sake, this one will also take you to my book. :-) But hey, while Amazon UK might be the easiest for you to order it, this other link to Amazon's US page for the book actually includes a "look inside" feature, so you can do a search on Haugh...

Re: Mickey mouse weekly covers request..1930's
I was extremely honored to write a bio of Wilfred Haughton for this book . Luckily, some of his family is still living; with their help, I was able to confirm just when and why he stopped working on Mickey. He was actually capable of drawing the more modern design, so that wasn't the problem. The st...

*20/3/1965: the only strip in the book to feature Polly Wolly Doodle, in just a few frames. Does anyone know what years she appeared as a character? If my memory is correct, a lot of the strips in that book have been edited to remove Polly—more or less just erasing her wholesale. It's happened else...

Re: This week's issue Take 2
I want so much to like what they're doing—but that new look for Dennis' Dad distracts me every time. It's not the hair or the absence of mustache that bother me: it's the podgy neck and the very different face.
