Re: Jack Prout / Black Bob

Your excellent illustration appeared in a Black Bob Annual. Unsure of the date but the British guide lists the back cover illo as Bob with 3 other dogs. If that's right it's 1959. Your illustration is part of the text story, Brave Bob on the Danger Trail. See page 50 of the annual. Did the annuals r...

Re: Have you picked up Brawler yet?

I bought it. It was ok. Some of the art is a bit clunky. The saving grace for me was the Westernoir story. I love the series. Also, the Dick Turpin tale was very good imo. Baker Street Irregulars was fun if only to work out who the characters had been adapted from and enjoying seeing Quatermass again.

Re: What's it worth?

Tom Poes is one of the best and most important Dutch strips. This page explains:-

Lots more here:-

It is simply excellent even if you can't read Dutch. I love it.

Avengers- the real ones

Research for an article brought me to Steed and Mrs Peel. And Mrs. Gale and Tara, of course. Intriguing to discover the comic strips which were published in the tv mag Look West, Manchester Evening News and other regional tv mags. There were 4 Mrs. Gale stories and I only have bad, dirty scans of th...

Exciting Comics - Phoenix like from the golden age

Antarctic Press has revived the old- ancient - Better/Nedor title, Exciting Comics, which originated in the '40's using pd superheroes from the GA - not only Nedor heroes. I got my hands on the first few issues and they are worth a read. Some original back stories are there but the GA vibe isn't qui...

That's a new one to me. I quite like the style but I admit I don't read the red tops, so I would gave missed it. I would like to know and see more. With any luck someonevwll come up with the goods :xfingers:

Re: Boys Adventure Comic blog

Re. Montalbano, thank you. I've been a fan of the books for a long time, even tried to read the original Sicilian versions. Very slow going. The comic seems only available in England and Wales, and that in small numbers. I didn't recognise many of the artists either. Later on, I'll watch the discuss...

Re: Looking back ----childhood comics

Thanks for the info. abacus. We've both said it, many storypaper covers and illos are very well done. I don't read the school stories - the only ones I really enjoy are Bunter and Nelson Lee - but in the storypapers there are a lot of exciting sf stories and a few genuine superheroes and masked myst...

Re: Looking back ----childhood comics

That's a nice looking comic but I never read it as a wee boy. I'm very well aware of it now, though. The first photogravure comic, I think. There looks like some lovely stuff in there. Can you tell me what the swords and shields story is, please. I started right away on cowboys and superheroes in th...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Apologies in advance for going on about an American comic. Rob Liefeld has produced what can only be described as a travesty of a comic with Archie's revival of the classic superhero, The Shield. I've never liked Liefeld's stuff and he hasn't improved imo. A chancer way back and still a chancer. I b...

Thank you both for your digging. Very interesting. I posted a query on a couple of sites and got absolutely zilch.

Re: Boys Adventure Comic blog

Richard, I've been reading your posts on cons and enjoying them. Brought back good memories, although some of the venues had no lifts and toting comic coffins up a stairs was a right carry on. At least we were fitter back then. What I can't find is any mention of Eisnercon, the Glasgow one from 1985...

Well, it's not recreational vehicle. I don't recall ever having noticed the stamps but I've posted a question on CB+. You never know, someone might come up with the goods.
