Tim Rice Eagle radio documentary

..it was made about 8 years ago, and repeated last month on Radio 4 extra. i like Tim and the programme was generally good, but i had a niggle that in the Dan Dare excerpts read out by a boy, Hubert Guest (modelled on Frank Hampson's father of couse) was consistently pronouced as Herbert. Surely tha...

Re: Big news for Ken Reid fans!

The original 6 week 9ie 12 page) Jasper run in 1965 Wham! coincided with the reduction in pagination from 24 to 20 (and price increase from 6d to 7d) and loss of colour pages apart from the front - the first 2 in the larger issues, and the last 4 in the smaller - other strips took turns in being omi...

This can't be right (retro model van)

..A toy van showing the Dandy priced at 2d featuring Beryl? The cheapest I remember the Dandy was 3d, when Beryl was in Topper, so when that publication ceased and she transferred to Dandy it would have been a much higher decimal price. (Haven't posted here for ages and had forgotten my password, wh...

Re: Illustrated children's book I have fond memory of

Just bumping this up - having given up on this ages ago, now re-trying. I can confirm that my copy had lost its dust jacket, so only had a plain cover (green I think) - any suggestions welcome!

Re: Illustrated children's book I have fond memory of

Thanks all for your help on this - I don't think it was the Wonder book, I think it had fewer pages and not much (if any) colour, one of the Gerald G Swan titles does seem a more likely bet!

Re: Illustrated children's book I have fond memory of

Re-googling 2 years later tells me the book is The Enchanted Fairground, Alys Myers probably the illustrator. Now if only I could remember more about an annual from the 50's which I acquired from a fete in the mid 60's only to lose when moving house shortly thereafter - it's not one of the major tit...

Appropriate that these are available when they've announced the price hike for next month, they're certainly having a laugh!

Re: A Christmas Gift--------from me to you

Thanks muchly for all these Steve. What's the answer to the Boys' World What Would You Do? I guess knotting scarves may come into it, and possibly the Christmas Tree?

Re: Glaring errors in comics

Of course to avoid any further confusion the singer Wee Willie Harris (name-checked in Ian Dury's Reasons To Be Cheerful, and I presume of Scots ancestry like Rod Stewart) was, like Tommy Steele, from Bermondsey, South London and once worked in the Peek Frean's biscuit factory there, which before it...

Re: Glaring errors in comics

And not really glaring, and it could be argued that it was showing the villain as a bit thick, but in an early Wee Willie Haggis story in Pow, the hero is being threatened with "the end is nigh, little English spy".

Re: Glaring errors in comics

Seeing Fidosaurus (originally in Eagle) reminded me that the 1965 Eagle Annual has a 4 page "Can You Catch A Crook" story about lorry hijacking printed with the pages in the wrong order (1/3/2/4)

Number 52 Nov 26th 1938

Apologies if this has already been dealt with, I have tried a few searches without success. I've just obtained from a charity shop "70 years Beano and Dandy- Comics in the Classroom" which reprints two Korky stories, one involving a male teacher and tacks, the other a lady teacher and a clockwork mo...

Re: Name that panel!

Power comics were so keen on un-Americanizing the stories (eg replacing fire hydrants with no parking signs <when they remembered, so street scenes had poor continuity> and deleting chunks of text relating to the cold war) that I'm surprised they didn't rename the frozen fellow to Captain Birdseye! :D

Re: Doctor Who 2011

(Apologies for mistyping "episode") - thank goodness that serial exists - its loss would have been at least as great as that of Tenth Planet Part 4. Because of its surreal nature, and the fact that the next story can be seen to follow on from the preceding one, there are those who say that it should...

Re: Doctor Who 2011

The Mind Robber is my all time favourite story. It's just so imaginative and totally surreal. And of course the 2 late changes imposed upon it (the small budget extra epsiode added to the beginning, and the temporary replacement of Frazer Hines who had chicken pox), both added to it! Just a shame t...
