Re: Sparky 1965 to 1973

Mutt and Moggy were very similar to Puss and Boots (they fight like cat and dog - their old tagline), but not quite the same. If anything, they were meant to be a younger version of them. I think Puss and Boots disappeared from The Dandy at or around the time of the 2004 relaunch, although they are ...

Re: Beezer no. 1 four page advert.

I'm sure Ginger had two spells on the front cover - he was the first cover star in the 1950s, yes, and he was again from the late 1960s to some point in the '80s (I think). I didn't know about Baby Crockett having the cover page. Interestingly, on the Wikipedia page, it says that Ginger, unusually, ...

Re: Any Vic Neill fans...Mc Ticklers...Plug..

I don't think David Sutherland would have been considered as a replacement for Neill. He was drawing The Bash Street Kids at the time (and still is now), and I think Jak MkII and Korky in The Dandy, although now he only does the kids. I think his (relatively) reduced workload (he used to draw loads,...

Re: Euan Kerr Leaves Thomsons

Steve, I have a question for you. Around when did you ghost Billy Whizz, and about how many did you do? As my username suggests, I'm a big whizz fan, and would like to know. I don't think I've ever seen any Billy Whizz strips of yours - I don't think they've been reprinted (or have they - maybe I've...

Re: Loving Minnie the Minx - Retro with a twist

Maybe he might be drawing something else that no one's spotted yet, or he's drawing for a comic we've never heard of (not very likely I admit, especially on here!).

Ken is a top artist though, and his Minnies have been great recently.

Re: Bananaman turns villain

Good idea, but I don't suit red! Mind you, I'm sure he was seen in blue at least once in the Mal Judge days. I wouldn't have bothered with the hair (too difficult to do properly) - as long as you have a decent enough outfit, and run around really fast, it doesn't matter, you still look like Billy Wh...

Re: Bananaman turns villain

I'd never read that rag (The Sun) :x , for the lies it wrote 20 years ago about Hillsborough. Untrue and unforgivable, but I won't go into further detail about it - after all, some comics are often seen as a form of escapism. I'll admit to once wanting a Billy Whizz outfit actually. They'd never mak...

Re: Any Vic Neill fans...Mc Ticklers...Plug..

Something funny happened in the early 1990s with Billy Whizz. I mean, Malcolm Judge drew him for almost 25 years up to 1989, yet in the following 18 years (before they started using reprints), no less than SIX different artists drew his strip! Barrie Appleby was little more than a stopgap in 1989, b...

Re: Euan Kerr sacked

Good to hear everything's okay Euan. Thanks for so many great years in comics - you've made a lot of people very happy indeed. I think what you've done for BeanoMax has been a real achievement, getting the new comic off the ground well.

Best wishes, Jonny

Re: Euan Kerr sacked

Please, Alan Digby, DON'T DROP CALAMITY JAMES!!! I don't even mind reprints here, just as long as he continues. Good to hear that BeanoMax can continue, though I wonder whether Max will change, although I'm not a regular reader, (or the Beano itself as a result, but that's unlikely). Hopefully worki...

If this is true, then this is TERRIBLE news!

Euan has done a great job editing The Beano and now BeanoMax. Who on earth will replace him?

Re: Loving Minnie the Minx - Retro with a twist

Spot on - I should have thought of that. I didn't know. What I meant was that Laura has kept Hunt Emerson's style intact rather than changing it to match her other styles. I suppose though, she'd been inking it for quite a while (between 2006 and 2008 - there was a short time I think where she didn'...

Re: Loving Minnie the Minx - Retro with a twist

Yes, it's interesting about Minnie in this week's Beano. I think artists like Ken are best working on a more traditional British style, which is certainly working for Minnie at the moment. On the other hand, Laura has drawn Manga in the past, and she seems to be good at quite a number of styles; the...

Re: The "Posh" (and over-expensive) Beano

Yes, of course I didn't think you'd keep the edible gifts! That whole post of mine was very tongue in cheek and should not be taken seriously. I usually just throw my gifts away - but then again, look at how much the last surviving Whopee mask (from the Beano no.1), evidence that one day even the si...

Re: Loving Minnie the Minx - Retro with a twist

Anyone know who came up with the idea for 'the menaces' and 'the softies'? Surely they deserve their five minutes of fame, in the same way Ian Gray has for creating Gnasher, although you could argue that Gray has certainly had more than 'five minutes of fame', being as big and extrovert a character ...
