Re: *ADVERTS SPOILER ALERT* #3617 - 7th Jan 2012

I was confused about the Bananaman situation before, but I'm even more confused now. I'm not sure why the Beano is reprinting old Bananaman strips when he's still running in the Dandy in a different style, and since the strips are reprints a crossover with Super School seems unlikely. I can't see wh...

Re: This week's issue Take 2

I open this week's Beano, and while quickly flicking through its contents (before reading it more thoroughly), I notice above The Numskulls story this: 'This story was written by Beano reader Harry Rickard!' I just wanted to say I thought your Numskulls story was really good Harry, it was a funny id...

Re: Ronald Searle RIP

Coincidentally (at least, I assume it was a coincidence) the first updated St Trinians film was on TV last night. Nice to know Searle's legacy lives on (even if the film itself is not really a St Trinians film in my eyes without George Cole as Flash Harry)... I hated the first of the new St Trinian...

Re: Dennis the Menace and Gnasher - the Pink Glove

I'm not sure how long the series ran for, however I'm fairly sure it was one of the stories which was adapted from the comic for the Beano Video in 1993, and I also seem to recall reading that felneymike's first issue of the Beano was around the time of the Pink Glove serial (correct me if I'm wrong...

Re: Beano: review of 2011

I just read your review of the year. I thought it was very interesting and you made some good points, and I can't recall ever taking so long to read a single post before! Here's my review of the Beano in 2011, based on the same points but a bit shorter (merely 1,243 words): 'There is no Plan D' - I ...

Re: Ronald Searle RIP

I remember reading last year about the mole drawings he did for his wife. It was a nice thing for him to do, and offered quite a contrast to much of his other work. He will be remembered for his cartoons, especially for St. Trinians. RIP.

Re: Football season 2011/12

I was saddened to hear the news about the death of Gary Ablett yesterday at the age of 46. He had been battling non-Hogkin's lymphona for 16 months. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16383027.stm I'm too young to remember him as a player but he will be fondly remembered on both sides of Stanl...

Re: currently on at the 'pictures':

I went to watch Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows at the cinema today. I thought it was great, and just as good as the first film, which I was a big fan of. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who wants to watch it, but it has some brilliant scenes.

Re: Football season 2011/12

Yes, who would have thought that injury-hit Blackburn, bottom of the table and with a manager who days ago seemed almost certain for the sack, would beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford? That really is a shock, almost more so than the Palace match, where United rested a number of first choice ...

Re: *ADVERTS SPOILER ALERT* #3617 - 7th Jan 2012

This seems odd, given that there's no evidence to suggest that Bananaman is going to stop in the Dandy any time soon, and I think it's unprecedented for a DCT-owned and created strip to appear in both comics at the same time. I might be wrong there though. If the new Bananaman is by Nigel, however, ...

Re: Wikipedia - aargh!

I can understand your suggestion, but I don't completely agree with it. I don't think we should limit it to strips that have run for a certain number of years, but instead its notability. For example, Jonah ran for only five years but is far better known and discussed more often than several strips ...

Re: Christmas Beano

I purchased the Christmas Beano on the day it came out but I decided not to post about it until after 25th December in order not to spoil it for anyone who hadn't seen it yet. I personally thought this year's Christmas Beano was excellent. For me it marked a significant improvement on last year's is...

Re: Wikipedia - aargh!

In my opinion, none of the strips which lost in Comic Idol are notable enough to merit Wikipedia articles, with the exceptions of Tricky Dicky, who I think is worthy of a page due to his earlier Topper appearances, as to a lesser extent is Gordon Bennett, who later reappeared in the comic after a fi...

Re: Dennis and Gnasher and Friends Cartoon Capers

I think there were just two Desperate Dan books in the ladybird series. I'm not sure what the other book was called (I don't have either) but it had the other side of Dan's face on the cover, so that when the two books were placed flat next to each other, you would see his whole face. The Beano/Dand...

Re: A Christmas Gift--------from me to you

I'm guessing that this strip is a reprint. I seem to recall reading that Ginger ran as reprints from when the last new Dudley Watkins was reprinted in late 1969, through to about 1973-74 when Bob McGrath took over. However, whether it was new or reprinted, I agree that it is an excellent piece of wo...
