Re: The new `Torchwood` season!

They do say that only seven unique stories actually exist in fiction and everything we read or see is a variation on them. Sometimes this gets overdone of course. Personally I have no problems with a story riffing on an idea from a film from many many years ago as long as it works of course. I am lo...

Re: Just Books

Finished Edgar Rice Burroughs 'Warlord of Mars', now reading some writings on Ancient History (thought it was about time), 'Against All Things Ending' - the last chronicles of Thomas Covenant and 'The Man in the High Castle' by Philip K Dick, as well as ecological/biological/environmental stuff for...

Re: Just Books

I have often wondered if many other comic readers are similar to me when it comes to fiction. I tend to go for novels that are part of a series or feature a recurring character. I am currently on book four of the Eagle series by Simon Scarrow. These feature two Centurions who get up to various scrap...

Re: Cost of getting comics bound

I just discovered these bound Beano and Dandy's on ebay. They do look really nice. Would be much better displayed on your bookshelf rather than have the comics squirreled away in a dark box. Binding does not seem to have harmed the value of these books! 52 issues is a lot for one volume though 26 i...

Re: Cost of getting comics bound

A few of the american comic forums have some quite long threads on binding comics. It might be worth chicking out John Byrne's Robotics forum and typing in binding in the search section. Some of his fans have posted pictures and details about bound volumes (including some Brits). I think you can get...

Re: Conduct Of Members

It is an unfortunate fact of life when it comes to collectors and hobbyists in general that a significant minority of them lack basic social skills. It is easy to become obssesive and pedantic over a subject if it has too large a part to play in a persons life. Some times it is useful to take a step...

Re: Vandalism!

To my shame I once grabbed hold of an old Action Man annual and used it for target practice during a spot of air rifle shooting. Not only was I ruining a perfectly good book that I had safely stored in my attic for years I was aiming at a British soldier! What was I thinking!!!

Re: The Victor, no spoils!

I cannot understand why you got involved in this, Lew, given that you definitely said that you wouldn't, and that I said I wasn't going to reopen the debate, as all I planned to do was explain my use of the term story paper to pawbroon, who had enquired about it. Then you changed your mind and need...

Re: The Victor, no spoils!

I was never a major league fan of the Victor it was always worth picking up but only if I had spare cash. I had the annual three or four years in a row mind you and always enjoyed them. The recent hardcover collection was terrific though and has inspired me to try and locate a few more annuals from ...

Re: Things that only ever happen (and happen a lot) in comic

I can't imagine kids these days being impressed by a slap up feed or even a midnight feast. When I was growing up in the 70's though it still seemed like a good reward to me. I guess we just did not have that many options back then. What did a seven year old spend his money on then other than sweets...

Re: A question for you all

I never thought of the Beano and Dandy et al as I did my Marvel weeklies. They were a genuine collection. My funnies just did not get thrown away. One day I was given the choice of keeping my Marvel's or my funnies during a house move and it was an easy win for Marvel. The sad thing is most of those...

Re: Great toys from childhood.

My Mum bought me a knock off version of the 007 secret agent attache case. I think it was called agent 707 or something like that. I loved it to bits. One set of toys I did have that few people seem to remember now were the translucent action figures called Cyborg and Mutron. I wish I still had them...

Re: The Best of Victor is out!

I ordered mine from Amazon back when they were 50% off. For me at least this is the best version of all these reprint books. I was never a massive Victor buyer. It tended to be an occasional purchase if I had any pocket money left rather than a must buy like 2000AD and the Marvel weeklies. I wonder ...

James Bond Omnibus

Has anyone other than me taken delivery of this book yet? I was really looking forward to this book but have to say I have been very much underwelmed by what I have read so far. The artwork is very nice stuff but it reads like crib notes rather than an adaption from a novel. I hope the stories impro...
