Themes in boys' comics

In girls' comics there are a number of readily-identifiable themes - the Cinderella story, the slave story, the sports story, and so on. ( Here is a list focusing on Jinty specifically, but across the range of girls' comics the same themes are used again and again.) What themes were seen in boys' co...

Re: Dr Mel Gibson, "Remembered Reading"

Just to say that I have written a review of this very readable and interesting academic book about British girls' comics, and posted it to the Jinty blog. https://jintycomic.wordpress.com/2015/08/13/remembered-reading-by-mel-gibson-book-review/ It's a great book, well worth the read. I don't know h...

The cat in the hat is Alley Cat, from Jinty.

Re: P.M. Wild / Pat Wild

I've had to following query on my site: "It turns out that a lady who recently died, wrote many stories for Bunty and some other publications. Her name was P.M.Wild The P stands for Pat. Is there anyway of finding out which numbers her stories appeared in?" Anyone have any details on Pat or know of...

Re: British comics in Greek magazines

Hello and welcome! I only recently became aware of the level of Greek translations & reprints of girls comics too, in the title Manina. There is a page about it on my blog, though I note that your examples are not from this area of comics so you may not find it as relevant, apologies if so.

Wow! That's one hell of a collection!
Does that include girls' comics too??!! Blimey!

I was slow in getting back to Pete to have him approve the final wording, but he got back to me super-quickly for which I am very grateful! Here is the post with information about union activities and their impact (or otherwise) on IPC title closures: https://jintycomic.wordpress.com/2015/09/01/ipcf...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Bought and read a collection of the new Batgirl comic, with her new costume, which was making an internet splash when it debuted. Very nice stuff actually, and very readable! Some moderately predictable elements to the plot itself, but really well told and gripping.

Re: Will The Dandy ever return?

I was agreeing with you, while highlighting the differences between what's out there now and what there used to be. The differences sadden me. It is heartening that The Phoenix is still flying the flag, but disheartening that so far it is still the only one. I did buy enthusiastically the first eig...

Re: Will The Dandy ever return?

I don't think any of the above are narrative-focused titles: That may well be so, comixminx, but my list was simply intended to show that it is possible to find a plethora of comics and magazines aimed at the 5 to 16 age range in convenience stores in England, in contrast to AndyB 's experience, wh...

Re: Will The Dandy ever return?

I've noticed that it's only possible to get comics and other magazines for the 5-16 age range in proper newsagents. Never in convenience stores. Out of curiosity I've just been across to my local convenience store (the main supermarket, Morrisons, is in the town square, a quarter of an hour's walk ...

Here's a couple of examples from an Usborne book called "How Your Body Works", illustrated by Colin King, first printed in 1975. It has mini people working more or less every part of the body, which is represented as giant machinery. ... The pages about the reproductive system are... Bizarre! I thi...

Re: Two Mandy stories I want to find

Thank you, Phoenix. As Tammyfan says, clearly someone's memory has got muddled in discussing the stories - we found with Alison Christie that her memory wasn't 100% accurate on all the details of the stories that she wrote, not that this is surprising given the time gap!

Me, too. This sounds like it'll be very interesting. British comics seemed such a mysterious, even secretive, business, it's always fascinating when this kind of background information comes out. If we could reveal some of the stuff that goes on it'd make your hair curl. He's mentioned some q...

Re: Fun List-based Quiz

Anyone ever been on that "List Challenges" site? Been addicted to it lately... Just made this one, on British comics - you just tick off how ever many you've read, there's 230 of them in roughly chronological order. I scored 142! I know I've missed loads, and I know there's some inaccurate informat...
