Re: Introducing myself - Jinty specialist, at your service!

I agree entirely about the gender shift, it is very good to see. I have been going to marts and comics events off and on for 25 years and it has been a big change indeed. It used to be that the panels at comics conventions were primarily made up of blokes talking, with a single token 'Women in Comi...

[quote="philcom55"]I think this is the episode in which the appalling Mr. Knowall met his Waterloo Tammyfan. Gloria sure knew how to pick 'em! :) I think it's nice and neat that it's Gloria who wises up and gives him the push for his arrogance, rather than the family members catching him out - which...

Re: Katy 1-10 Misty & Tammy reprints Vulcan For Girls?

In the Netherlands it was used for the Tina for the week from 29 January to 4 February 1972. Tina51972.jpg And they've flipped that cover for the Tina comic, too! Wonder why? Probably copyright or printing error. It could be printing error but it is an odd sort of error to make, not at all usual I ...

Whoopee sounds right to me (I'm sure you are speaking from knowledge in any case :) ) - I'm sure I've seen that artist too but wouldn't ever have been able to give more info than that.

Re: Mental health issues in stories (taken seriously)

I'll have to check but I think it ends with Pam living happily ever after by becoming pretty, slim and successful through her own efforts. It always disturbed me that such 'ugly duckling' stories invariably ended in this way, and never with the heroine becoming reconciled to her appearance...unless...

Re: Mental health issues in stories (taken seriously)

'Lady in the Looking Glass' was an interesting Bunty story drawn by Cuyas which seemed to touch on the difficult subject of body dysmorphia and eating disorders. Interesting, Phil! I have seen those pages linked to before within the forum, but you're right to point out the body issue problems which...

Re: Mental health issues in stories (taken seriously)

Some interesting examples there. The mother just waking up in Suzy is a bit of a glib answer it seems to me. I quite like the sound of the other two, unusual! And in both cases it is resolved the same way - the two mothers having another accident that cures them. Kind of like bumping your head, get...

Re: Katy 1-10 Misty & Tammy reprints Vulcan For Girls?

Here's my own copy of Katy no.1. Apart from 'Guitar Girl' and 'The Cats of Carey Street' the other stories included are 'Sister to a Star', 'Comb of Mystery' and a two-page humorous strip called 'Claws' (surprisingly enough the free transfers are still inside as well!). Gosh, what a lovely cover. D...

Re: Mental health issues in stories (taken seriously)

There was a story that featured mental illness in Suzy - I don't remember the title. But it was about a mother who becomes mentally disturbed after the death of her daughter and makes her other children suffer. She inflicts emotional and physical abuse on them, does not bother to pay the bills, and...

Re: Introducing myself - Jinty specialist, at your service!

Alas, no - I haven't been able to get to a Mart for a long time now due to having smallish kids. For what it's worth the lady in question was a big fan of both Jinty AND your blog! For me one of the most refreshing developments in the comics scene is the emergence of so many female fans in recent y...

Mental health issues in stories (taken seriously)

I have just been thinking about one particular Jinty story, "Waking Nightmare". It is a story that I wasn't ever that interested in at the time, despite being beautifully drawn by Phil Townsend - but looking back on it, it is part of a very small and unusual group of stories which took mental health...

Re: Katy 1-10 Misty & Tammy reprints Vulcan For Girls?

I've just picked up some Katy comics and was surprised to find the contents to be in colour. They are also very much in the same format as Vulcan; colour rpts of b/w strips, comic size and paper quality is very similar. A very cool little series. How interesting to hear of this comic which I'd not ...
